She introduced herself to the other recruits

Makoto was apprehensive at first, both annoyed and frustrated with her male colleague’s comments about her, but soon enough waltz into class.

“Makoto Niijima, reporting for student duty, sir!” She said sternly to the older gentleman, bowing for him out of respect.

“She’s doing too much…” said one rookie, followed by a wave of giggles and snickering.

“Hmm, Niijima… That name’s familiar. You have any relation to Satou Niijima?” The man asked.

“Yes.” Makoto replied with a soft, yet somber smile. “He was my father. He was stationed in Tokyo about 20 years ago.”

Talking about her father always made Makoto’s heart ache, like she was opening a wound that had just scabbed. But over time, she’s learned to remember the good he did rather than his untimely ****.

“He was a damn good officer, Niijima-san. I expect nothing less from you.”

“I understand, sir. I won’t disappoint.” Makoto said with another deep bow.

“Take your seat rookie.”

Makoto scanned the room and found an empty chair in the middle of the room, surrounded by a sea of other rookies. As Makoto made her way go her seat, she could tell most of the would be officers there didn’t care much; Whispering to each other, horsing around, or playing little games with each other.

On one hand, it made her feel disappointed that the future of the **** was acting like this, during their most crucial moments of learning. But on the other hand, and more selfishly, Makoto knew she’d stand out as an exemplary officer if this was her competition.

She sat down in her chair, whipping out a notebook and a pencil so she could take notes.

The recruits around her began to laugh, somehow shocked and bewildered by Makoto’s dedication and enthusiasm. Makoto found this behavior odd, but nonetheless ignored them.

“Quiet!” The older gentleman commanded. The room went silent as the mocking rookies quickly shut their mouths.

“Today is your first step into become officers of the law. It’s an important job, a job that comes with it immense responsibility. I expect you all to be diligent in your note making and questions, as there will be many things for you to learn on today’s patrol. Once you all get changed into your student uniforms, you’ll be assigned an officer as they go about their regular duties.”

Makoto raised her hand emphatically.

“Niijima-san, your question?”
