Chapter 5

What should I do now?
Explore a little bit
"I'll be right back, John," Julie assured me as she escorted her kids out the door, still regarding me with that cryptic smile. I couldn't help but wonder if she hadn't caught me ogling her as she bent over to fasten the youngest boys coat.
"Okay," I nodded with a smile, watching as she marched the two boys out into the snowstorm. I stood there by the fire for a few minutes after the door closed behind them, debating internally what I should do. The right thing would be to simply wait here in this room for Julie to get back, but part of me wanted to explore, to snoop into my former co-workers private life, and I knew I'd never get a better opportunity than right now. Despite my moral objections, I found myself quickly climbing the stairs to the second floor. I walked down the hallway, past the two open doors that led to the kids rooms, pausing only briefly on the threshold of Julie's room as I wrestled once more with my moral dilemma. Pushing my conscience aside, I stepped into the room Julie shared with her husband, glancing around curiously at the furniture and decorations. I had peeked into the room only a few minutes ago when Julie was on the phone with her husband but I hadn't gotten a good look at everything as I had been focused on listening to her conversation. Now I took the time to carefully investigate everything.
It was a large room, taking up nearly a third of the second story, with large floor to ceiling windows along one wall. Situated on the opposite wall was a king sized bed covered with throw pillows and comforters. Flanking the bed were two matching chest of drawers, each holding the accoutrements of it's respective owner. Julie's was covered with lotions, perfumes, and miscellaneous makeup while the one on the other side of the bed had much less on it, a few cufflinks and some spare change. In the far corner, I noticed a hamper of clothes as I moved across the room to the windows, peering out, checking on Julie and the kids progress. I knew I had plenty of time as I saw the kids running in circles around Julie, laughing and giggling, pelting each other with snowballs. They weren't even halfway to the house next door.
Turning away from the window, I wondered where I should snoop first. I could go through Julie's dresser or the hamper.
Which should I investigate first?
