What's next?
The confrontation
Morning light slips through the blinds, thin and pale, doing little to chase away the heaviness that settled over you during the night. You barely slept. Every time you closed your eyes, your mind replayed the sounds, the half-open door, the way you shouldn’t have looked but did anyway.
By the time Sadie stirs, you’ve already been awake for hours, staring at the ceiling. You hear her footsteps shuffle down the hall, then the bathroom door creak shut. A moment later, the shower starts running, the pipes groaning softly in the walls. You also hear the entrance door opening and closing, the guy has probably left.
You go to the kitchen and you sit at the table, with an untouched coffee cooling in your hands. The seconds stretch painfully, each one pulling tighter at the knot in your chest. You know you should just pretend. Keep quiet. Bury it. That’s what you’ve both always done with anything messy.
But when Sadie finally emerges, steam trailing behind her, hair damp and sticking to the back of her T-shirt, you can’t. She looks tired, like the messy night drained her too, but there’s also something else, something unreadable in her eyes when she notices you sitting there, waiting.

She freezes for half a beat. “What?”
The word comes out sharper than usual, defensive.
You swallow hard. “We need to talk.”
Sadie exhales, rolling her shoulders like she’s bracing for impact. “About what?”
“You know what...” you say quietly.
Her jaw tightens. She moves to the counter, busying herself with the coffee pot even though it’s empty. “If you’re about to lecture me, don’t. You don’t get to do that.”
“I’m not—” you start, but your voice cracks. You take a breath. “I just… I heard you. Last night.” Purposely omitting to have also seen what happened.
Her hands still on the counter. For a long moment, she doesn’t turn. Then she does, slowly, arms crossed over her chest. “So you were eavesdropping?”
“I wasn’t trying to, obviously!” you say quickly, heat rising in your face. “I got up for water, your door was open. I didn’t mean to—”
“But you did.” Her voice is flat, though her eyes betray a flicker of something: anger, embarrassment, maybe both. “You also looked?”
You don’t deny it. You can’t.
Silence swells between you, thick and suffocating. Finally, Sadie shakes her head, a bitter laugh escaping. “God, Danny, you're a fucking voyeur… what do you want me to say? That I’m sorry? That it won’t happen again? You don’t get to police me. You’re not my—” She cuts herself off, biting the word back.
“Not your what?” you press, your own voice rising despite yourself. “Not your boyfriend? Yeah, I know. Trust me, I KNOW. But that doesn’t mean it didn’t—” You stop, **** off the rest.
“Didn’t what?” she demands, stepping closer now.
“Didn’t matter to me...” you say, the words spilling before you can catch them. “Seeing you like that… it mattered. More than it should have.”
The air crackles between you. Sadie blinks, her expression faltering. For the first time, she doesn’t look like she has a comeback ready. She just stands there, damp hair dripping onto her shirt, staring at you like she’s not sure whether to scream at you or walk away.
Finally, she speaks, softer this time. “Danny… you’re my best friend. We live together. You weren’t supposed to see that part of me.”
You run a hand through your hair, frustration buzzing in your veins. “Maybe not. But I did. And now I can’t… I can’t just act like nothing happened.”
Sadie looks away, her jaw tight again, but her voice is quieter. “Then maybe you shouldn’t have come to the party, or at least you shouldn't have peeked into my room me last night...”
The words land heavy. You open your mouth, but nothing comes out. She grabs her mug, turns sharply, and disappears into her room, leaving you alone with the silence and the cold coffee.
And for the first time, you realize you’re not sure if your friendship will ever be the same again.
