What are we

You woke up next to Amy who was still sleeping, last night had gone better than you hoped yet you knew there was probably a conversation that needed to be had.

"Good Morning," said Amy sitting up a moment later not making any effort to cover herself.

"Good morning."

"Last night was," Amy paused, "unexpected."

"Very."

"But," she seemed to think for a moment, "I want to slow things down. I like you but I don't know if I'm ready."

"I don't know if I'm ready yet either," you said.

"So I guess, friends?"

"Friends," you said.

"Don't worry," said Amy, "I fuck all my friends."

Amy went to make breakfast as you went to do your chores only for Nicki to join you.

"Farmer," she said with a mock salute.

You laughed and threw more hay into the goat enclosure.

"Sounds like last night was good," said Nicki.

"Very, I can't thank you enough."

"You can start," said Nicki, "show me this operation."

You took Nicki on the tour and showed her how everything was set up and how theoretically it would work with more people.

"Well I'll be honest," said Nicki as you finished, "it'll take some doing but I think you could help a lot of people here."

"It doesn't have to just be long or short term," you said, "whatever helps."

After breakfast with the girls and a shower you found Nicki and Amy in the living room texting.

"How's it going?" you asked

"Frantic," said Nicki, "Amy's got a friend who just escaped an abusive relationship, they'll be here in a few days."

"Another girl I know from college," said Amy, "got fired for who she is and has been couch surfing, now she can't get any of her medicine and she has no way to get here."

"Christ," you said, "ok let's problem solve, you're friend who's on the street?"

"Nyx."

"Nyx, where are they?"

"Kansas City."

"Ok that's a drive but I can always get down to get her."

"You'd do that?" asked Amy.

"Sure, why not. What about your friend?"

"Sara," said Amy, "she can get to Boise but I'll need to figure out a way to get her."

"Leave that to me hun," said Nicki.

"Ok," you said, "I can leave in the morning to get Nyx, figure two days each way about."

"You're leaving again?" asked Amy, "already?"

"If her situation is that bad," you said.

"What about getting ready here?" asked Amy.

"I can work on that tonight, you'll have some time to get ready."

You went out to make up two of the houses, you had no idea if Sara and Nyx would get along so having the extra space might be a good idea. It took longer than you expected and you got ready to turn in after midnight. As you went to turn out the light Amy entered and sat on the edge of your bed.

"I can't believe you're leaving again."

"It sounds like Nyx needs the help."

"I know," she said.

Amy leaned in and kissed you on the cheek and as she pulled away she looked into your eyes.

"Slowing things down," she said seemingly to herself before leaving you to fall asleep.

You got up early and packed up the truck and when you were ready Amy came out to say goodbye.

She hugged you tightly, "you're coming back."

"I'm coming back," you said affirming her.

"Dave," she said as you climbed into your truck, "call me."

"You've got it," you said with a smile.
