Chapter 9

What's next?

Some identity confusion at the front desk

The whole situation was a little eerie. Lisa remained physically unchanged, but everything about her was like a completely different person. All of her mannerisms were different. The way she carried herself, her stride, she even had an accent. A sexy accent, you realized, and had to admit that the way she kept glancing at you felt almost flirtatious. She did know she was in your sister's body, right?

There were a handful of papers to be signed, but for the most part the process went smoothly. "Emily" followed the group without much comment, like she was thrilled just to be part of the group. Not like loud-mouth Lisa at all, who was impossible to shut up, sometimes.

"So... I don't get to see my daughter again?" Mom said to a large female guard at the front desk.

"Oh, I'm sorry, ma'am. Emily is already being escorted back to her cell to be briefed on the rules she'll to be following while she's here." The guard gestured to Emily. "And I should remind you that this young lady, right beside you, is your daughter. See, the administrators of Bo Peep feel it's very important for the participants to fully immerse in the lives they're leading, rather than cling to their old ways. It's a proven path to healthy reform and reintegration, isn't that right, Miss Doe?"

Emily answered, "That's right, ma'am. I for one do not want to fall back in with my old influences. So please just call me Lisa. It will sure help me out."

Mom gawked at both of them. "You can't be serious. This... is not my daughter."

"Ma'am, we are all aware of your daughter's current situation, but we all feel very strongly that all parties involved will be benefitted much more greatly by the Bo Peep program if everyone plays along. Now, Lisa, please sign this release form. Remember, it's Lisa Doe. Very good."

"Thank you, ma'am. I'm so excited to get home and finally relax. It's been a really long... day." She said, suppressing her accent with some difficulty.

"It's like nine in the morning." you muttered without catching yourself. You were so used to jumping on any opportunity to tease your sister that you temporarily forgot that the girl standing beside you wasn't even your sister. Well, not really.

She turned to you and grinned. "Well, brother, it feels like it's been a long day for me. Like I haven't been able to relax in a looong time." She swung her hip into you, playfully bumping your thigh with a laugh. "Oh, and I noticed I'm not wearing that big ugly shock collar they told me I was gonna have to wear. So thank you for that. I really mean it." She smiled so pleasantly at you that you did manage to forget for a moment that it was your sister's stupid, annoying face. The way she beamed up at you she looked... really cute.

"This is outrageous! Do you mean Lisa is going to be treated like a criminal in there?" your mom complained. The guards assured her that she was under no legal obligation to refer to her daughter in any specific way, and that their facility was fully compliant with all relevant laws and was in good standing with the federal bureau, but again encouraged her to keep an open mind and try to be a positive influence as they politely escorted all three of us out the door to the parking lot.
