Where does poor Lyndsey end up?
The Fort
I was marched along for many miles by a small contingent of the men. It was unpleasant to say the least. They didn't harm me but there was a lot of unwanted touching and prodding. They were fascinated by my fair hair and strange clothes, pinching at my blue jeans and white T shirt. I supposed I was a strange sight, wearing pants when they were the ones in skirts. At the same time, I doubted it was my clothes they were that concerned about. I heard them laughing to themselves and could only imagine what it was they were saying, presumably about me.
Again I shuddered. I had no way of getting home and now I'd been captured by the Roman Legion! My mind broiled with thoughts of what they'd do to me. I doubted any of them would be good.
After maybe an hour of walking, we arrived at a large town that I realised was the army's fort. It was huge, surrounded by high walls and filled with buildings I assumed must have been barracks, judging from all the troopers marching about. There were stables and blacksmiths and granaries, and a great cacophony of noises to go with them. I also couldn't help noticing the slaves running about. Most of them were men in simple tunics or even loincloths, but all of them wore shackles about their ankles and crude metal collars around their necks. Was that my fate?
I did wonder if all of this was just a bad dream, but I doubted it. This was pretty crazy, but my dreams had never been this detailed before.
I was led to a large building with an ornate red clay roof. I figured this must be the army headquarters. Whatever they thought of me, they clearly figured that I was unique. Maybe they thought I was a spy or scout for the German Tribes? Did Germans have female warriors? I thought of the famous Valkyries and wondered if there was any historical truth to them? Well in any case, I wasn't a spy, or a warrior, so whatever fate they determined for me, I wasn't getting out of it anytime soon.
