Determination

The grand hall was bustling with joyous laughter and music, the chatter of the guests creating a lively hum. But, for James, it felt like he was walking through a dream, his mind stuck in a loop of horrifying realization. His steps led him to Marissa, who stood alone by a marble column, her eyes scanning the crowd with a furrowed brow.

As James approached, Marissa's gaze landed on him. His disheveled appearance, the exhaustion etched in his features, the haunted look in his eyes - it was all too apparent something was wrong. The faint smell of Candy - a mixture of her perfume, sweat, and the unmistakable scent of sexual activities - hung around him. Her heart clenched as a wave of hurt washed over her.

James looked at her, his eyes hollow, filled with regret and self-loathing. "I found Nina," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.

Marissa's heart skipped a beat. A part of her had hoped it was all a misunderstanding, that perhaps there was still a chance to salvage the day. But the look in James' eyes confirmed her worst fears.

Taking a deep breath, she steeled herself, pushing her personal feelings aside. "Tell me everything, James," she said quietly, her voice steady.

As he poured out his heart, Marissa listened. His words were a mixture of disbelief, regret, and guilt. He told her about his encounter with Candy, about his initial confusion and the horrifying realization.

Marissa's heart ached for him. She reached out, placing a reassuring hand on his arm. "James," she said, her voice softer than before, "it's not your fault. You didn't know."

James shook his head, a bitter laugh escaping him. "That's the problem, Marissa. I should have known. I should have recognized her."

Marissa shook her head. "No, James," she said firmly, "This...this isn't normal. No one could have seen this coming."

She gave his hand a reassuring squeeze. "Now," she said, her gaze steady, "I need you to stay here. I need to figure this out."

James nodded, the relief evident in his eyes. He was not alone in this.

Marissa left him there, her mind whirling with thoughts and plans. She had to find Candy. She had to get to the bottom of this. And she would, she vowed. For James. For herself. For Nina. She had a mission, and she would not fail.
