What's next?
Danny is less cool than he thinks he is
[NOTE: This chapter happens in parallel with Abbie's narrative.]
"Yo, got 'em," said Danny.
"Wow," said Phil. "A girl gave you her number. How exciting."
Danny waved his phone at Phil. "And what do you have?"
"Well, for starters, I have the most wonderful fiancée in the world, and tomorrow you're my fucking Best Man at my wedding. So let's get that in order, right?"
Danny scoffed, but was a little embarrassed. The sound of laughter distracted the men, who looked up to the bar. Abbie was giggling and looking at Melanie.
Phil continued, "and also, you didn't put a name on that number. What's her name again, Danny?"
Danny stammered. "It's, um ... It's ..."
Jake chuckled.
Danny snapped toward him. "Hey, new guy, I get it, I'm the dummy here who doesn't have her name memorized. But you're probably just sorry it was me who got her digits."
"Lay off him, Danny," said Arthur. It was clear Danny was more embarrassed than anything else, and being snide toward Jake was his defense mechanism.
"It's okay," said Jake. "You're right, you got her number." He paused. "You all want another round? I'm going to go up to the bar."
The other men nodded. Danny mumbled, "I'm the one got her number, so whatever."
Jake turned away from the group and walked to the bar. The other guys resumed conversation, but half watched as Jake clearly began to speak to Abbie. Danny was particularly intrigued. Jake ordered a round of beers for the group. The bartender nodded and said something. Jake continued to chat up Abbie, and then with very little set up or warning, wrapped his hand around the back of her head and kissed her deeply.
As they made out, Danny reddened. Rick looked at him and shook his head.
"It's Abbie, by the way," said Phil. "But you got her digits."
