Chapter 3
by SchlockTheMonkey
Is Chekhov right?
Well, there's no OBVIOUS trap...
"We can't ignore a distress signal," you tell Chekhov, "but we will be going in with our eyes open." You open a channel to engineering. "Scotty, I'd like shields up at one third intensity, raised to full the moment we detect any other vessels. Anything that makes Klingons beg for help merits careful handling."
"Aye, sir," the chief engineer replies.
The precaution proves unnecessary. Thirty hours later the Enterprise enters orbit of Lequnos without incident. Mr. Spock scans the planet's surface.
"The planet is extremely rich in mineral wealth," the science officer reports. "Dilithium, kettnerite, fanopium, all in deposits quite near the surface. Picking up evidence of abandoned mining operations. Unpowered equipment in an advanced state of decay. Recent volcanic activity, centered on the remains of one modern settlement."
"Life signs?" you ask. After an anxious moment Spock nods. "Picking up Klingon life signs, concentrated what appear to be several small communities in an arc to the north and west of the destroyed settlement. Some evidence of advanced metallurgy and ceramics, but no modern power sources."
"Any life signs in the destroyed settlement?" you ask.
"Negative."
"Lieutenant Uhura, are you picking up any signal from the planet?"
"No sir," the communications officer replies. "All channels clear."
"We could beam to the ruins, see what we can learn before we confront the Klingons directly," Chekhov suggests.
"There are elevated radiation levels there, consistent with what you'd see from a destroyed power plant for a city that size, or from a wrecked spaceship," Spock reports, "however the area should be safe for a brief reconnaissance."
"Or we could send a party directly to the largest remaining settlement, talk to the surviving Klingons directly," Uhura suggests. "After all, they did ask for our help."
Lieutenant Sulu looks up from his post at the helm. "I wouldn't want to walk into a Klingon town without a lot of security at my back, whether they'd asked for help or not," he said.
Where do you beam down?
