Which Way Does Evan Head Now?

A Disguised Passage?

Chapter 4 by dracone

Evan wanted to make sure he had found everything, so he started by feeling around the wall near the entrance. Just to the left of the entrance, he found an entryway disguised as part of the wall. With a bit of a forceful push, Evan managed to open the door and found himself on a dimly lit set of stairs heading down, he couldn't see what or where the light was coming from. On his way down, he could hear what sounded like a stone sliding into place to block any retreat. At the bottom of the stairs, from what he could tell, there was an unlit torch half his height on a low-set sconce. He could hear the sound of someone, or something, in the darkness but decided that getting the torch lit took priority.

It took a bit of work to get the flint and steel he was carrying to spark and light the area. Just at the edge of the light was a beast-looking figure who seemed to be regarding him with mild interest. "Um...hi, I'm Evan," he said in an awkward voice.

"Oh, good, you're friendly," said the figure in a clearly feminine voice with a bit of feral tone. "My name is Fera. Any idea what is going on?"

"Not really," said Evan, "I just barely entered this dungeon."

"Wait," said the woman in surprise, "I'm in a dungeon? Well, that explains the strange door down here, come and take a look."

Evan slowly, and carefully, entered the main part of the chamber, waving and positioning the torch, he found the door in question, but he wasn't quite sure what side of the room it was on. It seemed to be an old iron or steel door with no apparent lock, all that was on it was carved images of two figures pushing. Evan blinked for a bit before saying, "I think this door needs two or more people to just push on it."

"Well, that explains why I couldn't open it on my own," Fera muttered to herself as she came up next to Evan and they both pushed to reveal a dark tunnel.

"Well, that's just great," said Evan in annoyance, "if the torch goes out we'll probably be completely lost."

"Actually, my kind can see in the dark just fine," said Fera, "until we find a way out of this place, I'm assuming the way you came has been blocked."

"Heard a large piece of stone sliding into place behind me on the way down," said Evan with a bit of an edge to his voice.

"I thought as much, dungeons have all sorts of stories about how they manage to anger most of the folks that enter them. Shall we?"

"I guess," said Evan as he made his way into the tunnel.
