Pregnant ladies' swim class with Nadine and Cheryl

Nadine laughs. "Why, that's quite a story, Mary," she says. "I'm glad they appreciated the food. Just not what I expected to hear about a young women's shelter."

"Uh-huh," you say. "I don't know about the smoking, you know? But I think they're doing well for each other. And Shari says she'll be moving out soon, now that she has enough for a down payment." You tug at your one-piece, untwisting the shoulder strap.

"We better get going," Nadine says. She adjusts her maternity suit around her big baby bump.

You help her up from the bench in the ladies' dressing room. You went with Nadine for her pregnant ladies' water exercise class, since her husband Chuck is busy elsewhere and couldn't drop her off.

The instructor lets you follow along with the class as Nadine's friend. She's a plump, frizzy-haired lady with prematurely gray hair tucked into a red and yellow swim cap, bright blue eyes and a round, youthful face.

The class has a break in the middle so that the pregnant ladies can go pee if they need to. Nadine heads back to the locker room while you chat with Cheryl, the instructor.

"After the first time teaching this class," Cheryl says, "I added the break."

"Oh dear," you say. "Did you see some little yellow clouds underwater?"

She grins. "A couple every class," she says with a twinkle in her eyes.

"Oh my," you say. "I'm glad there's a break, then. Nadine was telling me your class is one of the highlights of her week."

"Nadine's one of my favorite class members," Cheryl says. "I hope she comes back after her baby."

"Nadine's a sweetheart," you say. "She's my favorite friend from church."
