Chapter 11 by MidbossMan MidbossMan

Would you rather see the bodyguards taken out Vaarvel's way or Au Revoir's way?

Play it Au Revoir's way

In this situation, you recognized that speed was just as important as stealth. If Au Revoir thought she could quickly dispatch the guards, you were willing to leave it to her savvy. Vaarvel raised her eyebrows, then lowered them and returned a grin. "Well, well... How appropriate. You're really settling into this role as a gambler, Ciao," the sultry, Egyptian-looking South African laughed, placing one hand on her hip as you allowed Au Revoir to assume the lead.

"Ha ha! Au Revoir is no gamble, she's a safe bet!" the Frenchwoman laughed, giving a flex and patting her bicep.

"... A safe bet is still a gamble," Vaarvel couldn't help but add, although she was still smiling.

The three of you brazenly made your way into the interior of the ship. The inside was posh, but gaudy, with snakes-themed door handles, light fixtures, and statues assuaging your vision from every angle. Thankfully, most of the foot traffic was either on the outside or down in the casino, for now. You spotted almost no guests, but you did notice an increased presence of blue-suited Adder agents in combat gear, including body armor and helmets; they couldn't carry assault rifles in such a place, but they still came armed with sidearms, tucked into holsters at their belts. Your team was severely out-gunned. If it came down to it, you were ready to intervene and help Au Revoir, despite her instructions for you to stand back.

"Oh, you insult me, Ciao! If I must call upon your aid, you should simply let me perish. I would be too ashamed to show my face again as the team's combat specialist!" Au Revoir joked, showing no trace of nervousness, despite the enemy's numbers and gear. One would think she was some sort of comic book superhero with bullet-proof skin, capable of deflecting gunfire.

Of course, any delusions of her status as a conventional super-hero would vanish soon enough, once you saw how she planned to handle the armed guards. This next hallway from the kitchen to the interior was designed in a loop; that meant two armed guards circled in a parallel pattern, so that the gaps in which each long segment was unwatched were extremely minimal. It also meant that if anything happened to one guard, the second would be close behind, ready to fire upon the perpetrator. You certainly couldn't imagine Au Revoir trying to slip past without a fight, but even if she did want to, the window of opportunity was simply too small.

The three of you had taken up watch in a shadowy corner between a large snake statue and the wall of the sitting area. Vaarvel and you were packed tightly into one corner while Au Revoir peeked around the side, waiting for a chance to lunge out. That chance came sooner than you thought she'd intended; an Adder employee with a serving cart disrupted the flow of the patrols. It would be impossible to say why Au Revoir felt that a prime opportunity for attack, but she took her chance, running from hiding position as soon as the guard rounded the corner and clotheslining him in the back by extending out one arm as she ran past. Giddy laughter accompanied the motion, as the Adder agent fell onto his face. Au Revoir shot out one bare foot and connected squarely with the unarmed employee's gut, causing him to reel in pain. As the injured guard struggled back up to his feet, pushing up on both hands, Au Revoir knelt and grabbed the gun from his belt. With a blood-curdling grin, she clicked the safety off, then shot him twice in the unprotected area between the shoulder-blades and his helmet.

Showing a remarkable lack of gun safety training, she tucked the gun into the band of her bikini bottom, then delivered a crushing attack to the other man's face, sending him reeling and collapsing backwards. You finally came to understand why she'd attacked him; Au Revoir opened up the serving dish and licked her lips. "Jackpot!" she announced, happily holding up a thick meat skewer, before tearing into it with carnivorous, hungry smacking noises. She'd just been hungry.

You barely resisted the urge to yell out, reminding her of the second guard. Au Revoir quickly polished off the meat skewer, then, still smacking sloppily, took up a spot next to the corner where the second guard was coming up. When he turned the corner, she shot around, hitting his chin with one palm in a martial arts strike and causing him to nearly leave his feet from the force of the strike. This one didn't even have time to put a hand on his gun, before Au Revoir jabbed the leftover meat skewer up and through his windpipe. As if too impatient to let him die that way, Au Revoir grabbed his helmeted head with both hands and twisted, snapping his neck.

"Ha. Quite a lot of adornment for someone capable of snapping a neck so easily," Vaarvel commented, rolling her eyes. You got the impression she might actually be pouting a little at being passed over for this job.

"Ho ho! You're just jealous. You see, Ciao? You chose me and for that wise choice, your reward is free meat!" Au Revoir gestured towards the remaining meat skewers on the tray... it was piled far too high for anyone to finish them off in the limited time this guard takedown had afforded you all. "Bon appetit!"

You looked down at the man's backwards helmet where his neck had been fully turned around and skewered. You informed your ally that you weren't really hungry.

"I understand, my friend. This frou frou food does not suit you and I," Au Revoir shrugged.

"I'm going to ask you to leave that behind. Your smacking is going to draw more attention as we enter the next area..." Vaarvel joked(?), fixing her ally with an impatient grin as she resumed the lead position of the group.

What's next?
