Chapter 12 by Ganti

So, what is it? Necromancer Boss? Party of PCs trying to snipe? Paranoia?

Option A, but weaker then expected

You pause outside the room the Boss is in, and pass Lyrissa the second to last of the healing potions you'd taken off Jhondoe. Honesty compelled you to admit you'd both been more reckless then you likely should have been. Still, after healing, you were both... Well. Neither of you was in ideal shape, but you were both over half health. Neither one of you had seen any sign of another party, which was a bit of a relief. On the other hand, maybe you could have negotiated with said party. The boss, less so. You just hope they didn't get a Claim Crystal, or were too crazy to use it.

The door swung open and you eyed the single entity inside. It was... another shade. Very slightly more defined, though. You can tell it used to be a human spellcaster, at least. A glance at its stat bar gave you some hope.

Necromancers' Shade

Level 3 Shade.

Monster, Undead, Boss, Explicit

It was lower level then either of you. Bosses tended to get stat buffs, but shades were weak. This would be doable, even with your less then ideal condition. And long, bitter experience had taught you to be able to assess a situation and fight at the same time. A Shadow Bolt fairly leapt from your fingers as the Necromancers' Shade had started to turn around, and Lyrissa was nearly as fast on the draw, blades out and advancing after a mere heartbeats' hesitation.

It responded by unleashing it's own Shadow Wave at you, which... made some sense, given you outnumbered it, but was less then effective against Lyrissa. Armor and living flesh didn't get hurt nearly as much by the Arcane damage type as unliving flesh animated by magic did. You fared somewhat worse then she did, not having armor to reduce it before it reached you, but again, you were living. A second Shadow Bolt left your hand and impacted shortly before Lyrissa arrived. Her blades cut into it and she began to try and maneuver it so it was between the two of you, giving you an open shot. Kind of her. You match her by circling around the other way so she had less work to do and charge up a third Shadow Bolt. It was a bit repetitive to keep casting the same spell over and over, but it was the most effective one in your arsenal at the moment. Shades were practically immune to Cold, and were flat-out immune to plague or poison. Which was the limit of your single-target spells. You made a note to look into learning more later- You know that they're not just gained from level-ups, after all.

A deft twirl of blades that you can't quite follow and the Necromancers' Shade is down to half health. Of course, Lyrissa is flagging as well- she started with less health, and this is a boss. It's not urgent, not yet, but at the current rate of exchange... You frown, and try and focus more energy into your spells. The... you're not sure what to call it. It's not a Shadow Bolt, not anymore, fires off and impacts the Shade, noticeably staggering it and shaving off an appreciable chunk of its' remaining health.

You have cr

You push the popup to one side without really looking at it. What you just did worked. It was draining, but it worked. Repeating the process makes your channeling hand ache, which is concerning, but opens the Shade up to another of those fancy blade-twirls, and its' health drops into the red. It's almost-formless mouth twists into a snarl, and an eruption of energy pulses out from it, throwing Lyrissa across the room and into a wall, where she slumps down.

Bleeding out

That's more time then it gave Jhondoe, you dimly realize, but most of you is awash with concern and anger. You barely realize you've dropped your staff before you're nearly upon the Shade, casting hand plunged inside and braced with your non-dominant hand. The spell barely deserves the name- it's a near-uncontrolled blast of Arcane-typed energy. The lattice you wove with your non-dominant hand barely focused it enough you didn't injure yourself with it, the unleashed power literally shredding the Shade.

Congratulations!

You shove that popup aside as well, and pull out the last of the healing potions. Tilting Lyrissas' head back, you unseal it and pour it down her throat, hoping that this will work. Sure, she'd just respawn if it didn't, but... You don't really want to consider the but too hard, honestly. The timer over her head flickers and vanishes, the text shifting.

Stabilized

You nearly sag with relief, and do what you can to make her comfortable without moving her. You dimly recall that moving someone that injured was bad unless you knew what you were doing, and you don't. Satisfied, you turn your attention to one final task before you can collapse yourself. Pulling out the Claim Crystal, you activate it.

Claimant Crystal Used

Claim land?

You press yes, and slump to the ground in exhaustion. You vaguely see a second popup replace the first, but you're too tired to care at the moment, beyond the fact that it confirms the tower is yours now.

Your eyes drift shut, with the vague intention of dealing with it in the morning.

You open your eyes to a welcome sight...
