What's next?
Offer the girl a smoke
You walk to the doorway she's standing in. She startles a little when she hears you. She smiles timidly at you.
"Hello, I'm Jack. I saw you and thought maybe you'd like some company? Wanna share a smoke?" you ask.
"Sure, Jack. I'm Alice."
You take a cigarette and light it with matches. You take a drag and hand it to Alice. She takes a puff and holds it before letting it out. She smiles more naturally this time. "Thanks."
You exchange the cigarette a few times before she asks, "So what are you doing in St. Louis, Jack?"

The Summer of Love
Hitchhiking on Route 66 in 1967
The year is 1967, the Summer of Love. This is the era of Rock & Roll. The Beatles, The Stones, The Doors, and Procol Harum are the top bands. Johnson is president. The Vietnam War is in full swing. Anti-war marches alternate with civil rights protests, often led by Martin Luther King. Gas prices are 33 cents a gallon. You are eighteen years old, you live in Springfield, Illinois, the state capital, and you're a senior in Springfield High School. You watched the television coverage of the Human Be-In in San Francisco in January. When Timothy Leary said, "Turn on, tune in, and drop out," his words resonated with you, and you decided to head to California over Spring Break.
