Chapter 3
by gothamalleyviper
What is in the biographies?
Nothing that prepared them for their afternoon
“Giovanni, Romus,” Jill read aloud from the file on the laptop as they sat in the café, “Great… son of Pietro Giovanni, the Scillian and his wife Maria Beretta, no relation to the Beretta group.”
“Fun,” Chris said before grabbing a bite of his bagel.
“His mother came here and started up the Giovanni group after his father’s **** back in Italy,” Jill kept reading, “According to INTERPOL, his uncle brokered a deal between the Scilians, the Mainland Italian mafia families, the Yakuza, and the Hong Kong Tongs to do the initial investment in his mother’s company, he has long since bought out their shares and paid them back.”
“So they started up with mob money,” Chris said.
“But no strings attached,” Jill said, “According to INTERPOL. Also says it is believed he had a child with an executive for his company, a woman named Ariana. But not confirmed.”
“Why do they say that?” Chris asked.
“He had the boy christened with his name and adopted the boy on paper,” Jill read, “But no DNA testing was ever done. One Silver Giovanni. His mother and him also looked after a widow and her daughter who worked for their company years ago, one Jessica Murrow. Records indicated he paid for her nursing school and then hired her after she got done with the Japanese Ground Self Defense ****.”
“And where is Miss Murrow now?” Chris asked.
“No one knows,” Jill kept reading, “Payroll stopped paying her years ago. She could be off the books.”
“What about Grey and his security people?” Chris asked.
“Not much,” Jill said, “Butch and Cassidy both served. Butch was in the Russian Army before he left the country and took an American name. Cassidy was in the Hong Kong Regiment until the British turned the colony back over to China.”
“What was their specialties?” Chris asked.
“Butch was a linguist… for Special Technical Branch… Sounds like Spetnez translator,” Jill kept reading, “Cassidy was a… Hazmat certified NBC tech…”
“IN the Hong Kong Regiment?” Chris perked up.
“Maintained the NBC and Decon equipment and worked with the Bioweapons Defense Planning section for the Regiment Headquarters,” Jill kept going, “In case the Soviets of Commie Chinese tried to bomb the island with bacterial or viral weapons… And guess who was supplying the NBC and contamination detection equipment?”
“Umbrella?” Chris perked up.
“Yep,” Jill looked at Chris.
“Good Morning,” Officer Jenny said as she walked up to the table, “What are you reading?”
“Notes on the Giovanni groups employees,” Chris said, “Seems some of them have some interesting histories.”
“Do you want to go and have another chat with them?” Officer Jenny asked.
“I think we need to speak with Mister Giovanni first,” Jill said.
“Ok,” Officer Jenny said, “The Headquarters buildings are on the far side of Veridian City.”
*
The Phone in Chris’ pocket started ringing, it wasn’t the ring tone for the satellite connection either.
“What the?” Chris said as he fished the phone out of his jacket pocket.
“Are you going to answer that?” Jill asked from the driver’s seat as the device kept ringing.
“Yeah,” Chris put hit the button and put the phone up to his ear, “Special Agent…”
“HELP!” came the screaming voice punctuated by the sound of automatic gun fire.
“Who is this? What’s happening?” Chris shouted back into the phone.
“Professor Oak, some whackos are trying to kill me, I can’t get through to the police!” he screamed.
“We are on our way, Jenny call the station, Oaks is under attack,” Chris called.
“On it,” Jill said hitting the turn signals and changing lanes to get the turn.
“Station come in?” Jenny called into a radio she pulled from her purse.
“How many and what can you tell me?” Chris shouted back to the Professor.
“Four of them, like the SWAT in the start of Dawn of the Dead!”
“We are on our way, where are you?” Chris said.
“In the kitchen…”
“Line’s dead!” Chris said.
“No response on the radio, let me see your phone,” Jenny said.
Chris handed the green haired police officer his phone and half expected her to throw it out the window, but she dialed a number, then tried dialing another number, then a third…
“Thank god, this is Jenny Badge number 8923, I can’t get the police station, I am with the PABS agents and we just got a call that people are shooting up Professor Oaks’ place. Get to the station and get people out there, and find out what is wrong with the radios and phones at the station!”
“Who was that?” Jill asked.
“One of my buddies who has the day off, she lives over the bakery across the street from the Pallet Town Police Station,” Jenny said handing the phone back to Chris, “She can get people moving from there.”
“You armed?” Chris said as he tossed the phone in the seat next to him and pulled out his sig.
Jenny pulled a Soviet Makarov pistol out of her purse and checked it.
“Good,” Chris said.
“I know the chief said you had pistols…” Jenny started as she looked back.
Chris had his new issued SIG out and was checking it.
“Get the spare mags out of the glove box,” Chris said.
“Sure,” Jenny said opening up the glove box in front of her, “How many mags do you have? There are what… a dozen of them here!”
“You were never stuck in a haunted mansion filled with zombies, mutant animals and killer plants,” Chris said.
“Nor in a city over run with zombies!” Jill added.
“Can’t say that I have been,” Jenny said, “But, I see your point.”
“One minute out…” Jill said turning on to a side road.
In the road were two men in back gear. Chris rolled down the window next to him as fast as possible. Jill hit the gas, and Jenny ducked. The rental struck the one in front of them launching him into the sky above the car, while the one on the right dived to clear the car, Chris stuck the pistol out the window and took a few pot shots at them and their cargo van as they sped past the improvised road black. The screams from behind them as the flying man landed behind the car indicated that the two were injured.
“I think I got it the spare,” Chris said.
Jenny screamed something that seemed like ‘holy shit’ in Russian.
“Fucking Jaywalkers!” Chris shouted from the back seat.
“Chris! Look, they got the Professor!” Jill said.
“Go Momma buffalo!” Chris shouted.
Jill kicked the gas pedal to the floor.
“What do I do?” Jenny shouted.
“Shoot from out the windows,” Jill screamed as she rolled hers down.
“And Aim High!” Chris said as he reloaded.
Down the road and in the Professor’s driveway was four figures in black **** gear with gasmasks over their faces. The four of them stared at the on coming car like deer in headlights. Chris stuck his arm out the window up high while Jill did the same low and both started shooting. Jenny did likewise on the other side of the car as they came flying at the five. The four figures around the Professor then panicked, crouched and tried to scurry off behind cover as the car came screaming at them, they had forgotten to return fire at first. By the time they realized it, Jill was right at the driveway and their return fire was way to high.
“Cut left, snatch and grab!” Chris shouted into Jill’s ear.
The car jerked to the left, then straightened out and came to a screeching halt next to the prone form of the professor. Chris kicked open the door and grabbed the professor by the belt, yanked him into the car and threw him into the rear passenger side door. Chris slammed the door shut and slapped Jill on the shoulder with his free hand. Jill hit the gas and the car skidded out as it swung around and started back down the road away from the professor’s house.
“Holy Shit!” Jenny shouted.
“What the fuck!” Professor shouted.
“How often do you practice that?” Jenny shouted.
“That was the first time we even thought of it,” Chris started laughing.
“What?” Professor Oaks shouted.
“FUCK!” Jill shouted.
“What?” Jenny jumped in her seat.
“No one was recording,” Jill shouted, “That would have been perfect for COPS!”
“This isn’t a fucking action movie!” Professor Oaks shouted from the rear passenger seat, “My life was on the line!”
“Hay, it beats living in a Zombie Movie Professor,” Chris chuckled.
“You are fucking insane,” Jenny said before swearing in Russian.
“Hay can I see that Mack?” Jill asked.
“Sure,” Jenny said as she pulled the magazine and racked the slide before handing it over, “Here you go.”
“Chris, Scooby Doo?” Jill said as she took the pistol from the officer.
“Sure, let’s get you up and in a seatbelt professor,” Chris said as he grabbed the figure and yanked on his hair.
“OW!” The Professor shouted.
“Sorry, but Wanted to make sure it wasn’t a Scooby Doo or Mission Impossible man in a mask gag,” Chris said.
*
“Ok hands in the air,” Jill said from behind Jenny.
“You heard her,” Chris said.
Jenny felt the muzzle of the Sig pistol against her spine and complied. The four walked into the police station with Professor Oak and Jenny in front of Chis and Jill.
“What the hell is going on?” A man wearing a captain’s police uniform shouted at the sight of the tow agents walking in the officer and scientist at gun point.
“We need to see ids,” Jill said.
The man in the Captain’s uniform reached in back and pulled out a bifold wallet and opened it, revealing a badge and an id card.
“Care to tell me why the hell you have one of my officers at gun point?” the man snapped in an American voice with a slight southern accent.
“She went with us to see the Professor at his lab and a vet clinic and then the Professor got raided by goons in Umbrell gear,” Jill snapped.
“On top of it,” Chris said, “We couldn’t get a hold of the Pallet Town Precinct.”
“Takako, call the precinct!” the Captain snapped at a woman sitting at the desk sergeant’s desk, “Now could you release the officer.”
“What’s her name?” Chris asked.
“She is Officer Yenni-Amlliq-Inuk-Tuqiiq… fuck, we just call her Jenny for short, she is the officer of the month!” the Captain pointed at a public display board.
Chris and Jill looked at the board and saw the smiling face of the officer with her full name taking up three lines in English, another three in Cyrillic letters and both sides of the height of her photo in Japanese characters.
“The fuck?” Professor Oak asked.
“I was a sickly baby,” Jenny shrugged.
“How does that make for a paragraph of names?” Takako asked from the Sergeant’s Desk.
“In Yuits society, baby’s are thought to be reincarnations of ancestors, and if one gets deathly sick, you gave them the name of the wrong ancestor. So I was deathly ill a few times as a child so they kept sticking on a new name until I recovered,” Jenny said, “And because I was a Yuits girl, I was at the bottom of the list of priority for Soviet Health-care… So I got all the names.”
“Ok,” Jill lowered her Sig, “Sorry, but we have trust issues…”
“I can see,” Jenny said.
“At least it wasn’t one of your own officers trying to kill you,” Chris offered.
“We still need to get someone to check on the vet clinic!” Jill snapped.
“Captain, I can’t get the Pallet Town precinct,” Takako said.
“Get officers over there and send some to Professor Oak’s place!” the captain shouted, “You said that people attacked the Professor?”
“Held at gun point!” the Professor snapped, “Repeatedly!”
“Let’s go,” Chris said, “Three people with the professor at all times.”
“Yes, lets not stand out in the open!” Professor Oak, rushed away from Chris.
“Which vet clinic did you visit?” The captain asked.
“The Nurse Joy vet clinic,” Jill said.
“Which one? There are two in town…” The captain said, “Fuck it, Takako, get officers to both of them!”
“Yes Sir!”
“Also, why did Jenny have a Makarov?” Chris asked.
“We all have Makarovs,” The Captains said pulling his own out of a holster, “The Soviets donated about a half million of them to the special economic region in the sixties to gain leverage over local arms production since we were so close to the Soviet Union...”
“That makes sense,” Jill said handing over the Makarov to the officer.
“Unfortunately, with a half million of them in stock, we haven’t been able to convince the leadership to let us buy something new,” the captain rolled his eyes.
*
“Thank god you are here!” Jill shouted over the din of the helicopters.
“Heard you folks had some excitement!” Barry smirked.
“Come on,” Chris shouted.
“Lets go boys,” John said to his team.
“Here,” Barry handed Jill a range bag, “Gifts from our German Friends, new UMP is Forty!”
“Germans? In Japan?” Jill asked.
“Some times it is better to not ask questions,” Barry said with a naughty grin.
“Your team is to guard the professor, no less than three people with him at all times,” Chris snapped, “I don’t want any excuses like a Licker hiding in the vents in the bathroom or some bullshit.”
“What?” John asked.
“It’s happened before,” Jill added.
The group made their way into the entrance of the police station. Takako was still at the front desk, but wearing US donated PSGT vest and helmet, and the Captain stood with a few officers in similar gear.
“John, four of yours go with the police to secure the Nurse Joy clinic and the specimens in quarantine there, the rest help secure the building,” Chris said, “Captain, this is John Andrews, a veteran in the fight against Umbrella and their bullshit. His team is going to help secure the precinct and the Vet clinic.”
“Alright, Jenny, you are with me,” the police captain said, “Lets get in the riot van.”
Officer Jenny glared at Chris and Jill for a second, then turned and left without speaking.
John turned to the squad sergeant who looked at four of her guys.
“Alright knuckle heads, go with the Captain,” she snapped.
“Takako is the desk Sergeant, get with her for the rest of the stuff,” Jill said, “Lets go Berry.”
