Not fast enough

Slight panic set in Amy's eyes before they settled back into calm focus, noting down the sight of the flying object slamming into the side of the road ahead of them, dust kicking up and making the air thick as the black smooth machine was embedded into the grassy plain.

The Dwight D. Eisenhower highway connecting Suisun to Vacaville that they were currently driving on was elevated from the ground, yet Amy knew it didn't matter when the alien war robots had long legs. She only hoped that they can drive past it before the pilot activates it.

From within the translucent top, the grey, red-eyed jellyfish-like alien shifted it's eyes to take in the surroundings before lifting it's tentacles to press on a few screens displaying neon green text. The pod quickly rose up on 3 thin long flexible black metal legs, pushing aside more dirt and dust as it shifted around.

It did all this with incredibly fast speed, quickly springing up to tower over the raised highway.

Amy was hoping to drive past the alien machine, stepping on the pedal as she looked back at Hailey still blissfully sleeping and unaware. She didn't want to scare Hailey or alarm her if possible, but they needed to be ready to get out and run if it comes down to it. Once Amy looked back to the road, there were three long black metal stalks beside her.

Amy cursed under her breath as she realised the war machine was already up. She hoped to silently speed past while she drove as fast as she could, the alien machine silently scanning it's surroundings from a higher vantage point.

Amy sighed as she quickly drove past the legs, leaving the machine behind as the vehicle sped down the road. She thought it was all over until she looked at the rear view mirror, only to see the machine turn directly towards the vehicle, bottom front splitting to expose a gun barrel. If this followed them into Vacaville, their safe evacuation zone wouldn't be safe after all.
