Chapter 15 by throbbin

What happened during the raid?

Not everyone followed instructions

The captain tells you that the attack itself went well. Thanks to surprise you lost just one goblin to a lucky arrow shot. No slaves or slavers escaped. The trouble came that night when one of the lieutenants caught two goblins trying to have their way with one of the captives. They claim she insulted them and then dared them, but the captain didn't take that as an excuse and had them both executed.

You nod in approval. Execution is a harsh sentence, but in effect these two were disobeying direct orders from you and the laws of the tribe as a whole. The only sentences possible would have been death or exile, and your father was never a fan of exile. His opinion on it was "It's either a slow death from the elements or animals or it's putting information or ammunition in the hands of my enemies."

Thora looks a little surprised and you'll have to explain it later, but for now you say that the raid cost the tribe three lives - that was the cost. Now what did it bring in profit?

The captain gives you a nasty grin. "They were light. Musta sold some not long ago. We killed off eight slavers, then the other two surrendered. One's a woman. They had seven slaves in the wagons and we found some good wine, lots of human food - good for travel, and some coins and gems. Oh - all but one slave is a man."

Hmmm. Not exactly what you had in mind. Usually slavers have more slaves and there's usually an even number of men and women among them. The female slaver is unusual too. The wine and preserved food is going to be very handy for feeding these slaves, but for the lives lost you had hoped for more.

You decide to talk to the prisoners, both to explain the fact that they are now indentured servants and to ferret out some more information.

Who to talk to first?
