Chapter 3

Does he catch the bus?

Nope

Mark got to the bus stop just in time...just in time to see the bus pull away and drive off.

“Dammit, Dammit, Dammit.” He said, nearly sobbing in frustration. This was the fourth time since school started that he’d missed the bus, and it was only November.

As he trudged back to his house, he passed by Mrs. Johnson, who was out watering her lawn. When she saw him, so seemed to go still, her eyes following him in a nearly predatory way. He hurried by, wondering what had gotten into her. She was usually a very sweet woman. Maybe she was having marriage problems. Her husband was a bit of a deadbeat.

He paused at the doorway, knowing his mother and Andrea were going to be pissed. Resigning himself to a chewing out, he opened the door and called out “Mom, I missed the bus.”

Her sigh was audible from the living room, but to her credit she kept her temper.

“Mark, we’ve talked about this. Set your alatm fifteen minutes earlier, don’t spend so long in the bathroom, with the slightest bit of urgency, and this wouldn’t be a problem. I don’t see why that’s so difficult.” She said, looking at him disappointedly.

“I know, I know.” He said, ashamed, “It’s just hard to get motivated to go to school when everyone there treats me like crap.”

“I know that sweetheart, but you’re really making the rest of our lives harder, now Andrea had to drive you to school.”

A loud, somewhat enraged voice called from the other room: “I am not driving that loser to school again! I did it last time, and the time before that. Let him walk to school, that would serve him right.”

Mark’s mom sighed again, and seemed to wonder whether it would just be easier to drive Mark herself.

Who drives mark to school?
