Chapter 11 by HistoricoPublius

Does anyone approach Alice?

Nope. She's going to have to do her own legwork.

After a few moments of waiting languidly next to the pillar, Alice sighs in frustration. Damn these men and their propriety! Will no one approach a young, eligible, attractive, young, and above all lovely woman alone at a ball? She shall have to pursue someone or other herself.

Glancing around the room, she spots a couple of likely-looking prospects. {if Simmons-Alice > 0}Captain Simmons is standing alone, looking rather mournfully at the dancing, she notes. Her heart flutters slightly at the glint of brass on his chest - how marvelous a man looks in uniform!{else}There is a young man with a chiseled face and unkempt dark hair and whiskers looking rather mournfully at the dancing couples, she notes - and, what's more, the man's a soldier. An officer of some kind, even! That seems very promising.{endif} There's also a dour-looking man who came in with that Mr. Twilwell - Vickery, she thinks his name was. Vickery is sipping punch idly and watching the proceedings with a look resembling amused scorn on his face. Alice isn't sure what his exact feelings are on the ball, but she is intrigued by the way he holds himself aloof from it all...

Who does Alice approach?
