You feel terrible as you look down at the forlorn hope in her eyes. Sarah was a beautiful woman and a good friend. But you just don't feel the same way about her, and there's nothing that you can do to change that. You decide that you have to answer quickly, as painful as it may be, to avoid giving her any false hope.

Looking at her again you can only sigh, as you realize that you must heap another disappointment onto her already clear misery."Sarah, you're a friend but-" Before you can say anymore Sarah cuts you off. "You don't have to say it, John." She murmurs, breaking eye contact to push her head against your chest again. "You don't feel the same. Of course you don't, that's why I never told you until now."

"But..." Her words fade as she holds herself tightly against you.

"What, Sarah?" You ask, tenderly taking hold of her chin and turning her to face you again, eager to do something to cheer her up. As you look deep into her still damp eyes Sarah sighs. "I know you'll never choose me over Miranda but..." Again her words fail her and she glances away, but you do your best to hold her gaze, as nonjudgmentally as possible. Looking back into your caring eyes she continues. "Can I kiss you, just once? Like we were a couple?" As she asks this her eyes plead with yours, as if this was all she'd ever wanted.

Even after everything else that had just happened you're a little shocked by the question. After all the things that had happened tonight, this still feels particularly intimate, and you really don't think Miranda would approve. But still, Sarah seems so sad and pitiful now, your heart tears at the thought of refusing her. "Please John?" She begs, stepping closer to you. "Just one kiss, to remember you by?" Her lips look so soft as she pushes towards you, and she's still as beautiful as she's always been, despite her reddened eyes.
