No but a close call

The stench of sulfur strikes you and heat dries the air making you wrinkle your nose in discomfort. The rushes are suddenly thrust aside, bursting into flame at the touch, and the attacker of the wug village is nearby.

His figure was that of a human but that was all that could be said, for if he had been once a man, he was most assuredly no longer. His body was robust as if armoured, but blackened like volcanic rock. Skeletal fingers projected from huge wristbands split by hairline cracks glowing like magma. There was only a skull for his head, burning bright and black in its own personal conflagration, a torch of flame like a candle wick blazing from his neck. In fact, his whole body was aflame, the inferno licking from every seam of his armour and spilling over him, wreathing him as surely as the steam of the water he stood in.

But thankfully the demon didn't find you, instead another party become the victims of its hellfire. Amphibian and Human screams of pain and eventually the smell of burnt flesh reach you. You gag, the foul smell turning our stomach inside out.

The screams got louder as several of the demons victims spread out and ran for it, while the monster waited a few seconds before hunting them down, merely toying with them.

Your party moves very slowly, **** not to catch its attention. The four wugs at front while you and the other woman at the back. During the journey, newly awakened desire for freedom warred with the wug's poison and mental disability from your imprisonment. But in the end, you didn't have to make a choice.

Wugs, cowardly monsters by nature left you and the other woman behind after spotting the demon again. They tried to flee, drawing the demon to them.

As the one with some higher mental function still left, you took the woman's hand and took her with you. Waddling through the swamp, hiding within patches of reeds. You walked mindlessly, simply trying to put distance between yourselves and the demon. Soon you the swamp water began dissipating and dry ground appeared. The dusty and rocky road of the ancient trade route greeted your eyes.
