"Last night was crazy, obviously. But I'm with Elizabeth. I don't want anybody else. I hope that you understand. It's nothing against you, I just—"

"You are so serious!" Li laughed and pushed me a little, and threw her head back in a sudden grin. Then she excused herself to the bathroom.

The door opened and Elizabeth dropped her book bag on the floor. She was a vision in warm weather clothes: long, smooth legs under shorts, dark hair rippled onto bare shoulders, and generous cleavage. I rose to greet her with a kiss.

I asked how her morning was and she told a quick story about her professor showing up late to class, having forgotten what day of the week it was. "So we all sat there, waiting. Well, I did. A few people left."

Li returned, greeted her roommate, and resumed her place on her computer.

Elizabeth and I were out the door and walking to lunch before she screwed up the courage to ask,

"Was last night...OK? I should have asked, or... checked? I mean, it's not as if we set new boundaries, but... I'm not sure how this works anymore. Did you know that Stephanie and Simon broke up? I don't want that to happen to us."

The news of the sweetheart couple from our group splitting up rocked me to my core. I pulled Elizabeth into a tight embrace, and made a promise. "I only want you, Elizabeth. We'll find a way."
