Chapter 2

Do they make a run for it?
No, that'd be stupid

They walked into the lobby of their apartment building.
"No," said Mary, breathing in deeply. "For all we know, these things could be recording us right now. I'm not gonna risk it."
Alexa shook her head.
"You know, I was really looking forward to Scantron State."
Mary took a step forward.
"You don't get it, do you?" she said. "If we run away, forget Scantron State. We're never gonna see our parents again. There's no way we can walk into a f**king store without getting arrested."
The reality of it hit Alexa like a brick wall. Of course she was being stupid. Who had time for logic in this kind of situation?
"So we do it?" asked Alexa.
"Fake it 'till we make it," said Mary.
The two stared at the walls of the lobby, wondering if they'd ever see them again. It was a strange feeling.
"I love you," said Alexa. "I don't tell you enough, but it's true."
Mary smiled.
"I love you too."
They stepped onto the elevator, which was full of people, and Alexa pressed 23.
"Mares! Lexie!" said a blond boy. "So ya guys comin to the party on the 8th?"
"Not right now, Brad," said Alexa.
"Alright, fine, I won't call you Lexie," said Brad. "But seriously bruh, what's got ya down?"
"The f**king test, that's what," said Mary.
Brad's eyes went wide in disbelief.
"Both ah you?"
Alexa nodded.
"Geez guys I'm sorry," he said. "Thought you was taking that class, wasn't you?"
"Yep," said Mary.
Brad stared at the ground for one solemn moment.
"Well, wish I could help ma dudes, but this is me," he said, stepping onto the 11th floor.
As soon as the doors closed, Alexa said "At least we know who our friends are."
Soon they reached their floor and made their way into their apartment. It was a fairly nice three-bedroom place, where they lived with their parents. They wondered how they'd break it to them. Luckily their parents weren't home, so they didn't have to worry about it just yet.
