Does he reunite it with its identity?
No, but he offers it relief.
An idea struck Jamie. He rooted around until he found what he was looking for and easily peeled it away.
"Do you still want to be reunited with your identity?" he asked tentatively.
"No." The body was pensive. "What did you do?"
"I took away your longing for identity." He searched its face for a reaction but found none. "Could you - could you still act like Ashley?"
The voice spoke. "The body could, but it won't. That would be unpleasant and awkward. The body still has its faculties and will, just not its identity."
He could fix that. He grabbed another item, quite a bit larger and harder to dislodge. It visibly drooped as he took it. "Now act like Ashley."
It perked up, a sudden frown forming. "Did you take my free will? I was gonna use that, you know."
Jamie grimaced. That was exactly the kind of joke his wife would make but it sounded weird coming from this thing. It was like a bad actor reciting lines.
"Don't like it, huh?" The face wore a forced facsimile of smugness. "What did I tell you?"
"Yeah, ok, stop. That's... ugh, that's no good."
"Thank you. Would you please put the free will back?" It took on that same pseudo-personality it had before.
