Chapter 2 by Cantalope Cantalope

What are you?

Nimrev

Those were the thoughts passing through the poor creatures mind. Sigh... If only you could help it in some meaningful way. The little morphworm slowly crawled into an attack position hanging from the cave ceiling, waiting patiently for some low level hero. You'd seen it countless times before: the poor things would get themselves all worked up...and then fall into depression when they were inevitably slain. None were more intimately aware of their struggle than you, for you were Nimrev, God of Vermin.

Not that you played a particularly large part within the game, you were practically nonexistent compared to your many brothers and sisters. They mocked you endlessly whenever you crossed paths with them in the aether so you'd effectively cut ties with all but Lorchos, God of Darkness, and you only kept in touch with him because most of your creations thrived in the dark. It wouldn't do to upset the landlord. You had no real followers, only the most basic vermin had any inkling of your presence and they existed almost like an extension of yourself anyway. You appeared in a few backwater quests for some of the stranger classes but ultimately you were just an observer to your children's suffering...it was heartbreaking. Granted, most of your "children" were horrifying bottom feeders and the rest were insidious parasites but really: a God could only take so much.

You often thought of elaborate schemes to uplift your children from the dark corners but ultimately it became a question of power. Power you simply didn't have. A god's powers were closely linked to their sphere of influence: number of followers, devotion of said followers, the number of sentient beings who relied on their aspect of the world, etc... Basically: nobody recognized your existence so you were virtually powerless. You needed priests, a cleric... hell, you'd settle for a little well placed fear from townsfolk. Any recognition whatsoever would be better than this. You glumly watch the morphworm struggling to dislodge a stalactite on top of the tutorial giver before turning away. You couldn't bear to watch. Not again.

You're turning your attention to an abnormally large swarm of rats massing in the Pale City's sewers when a flicker of energy brings your attention back to the morphworm.

Did it just level up?
