Nanobots.

They exited the elevator on the fourth floor of the Science Building and made their way down the hallway. At the lab entrance door, Bob entered his security code to unlock the door.

The panel of professors and scientists had not arrived yet, so they made their way through the viewing room and into the lab proper. Bob and Jake led them to a row of stainless steel vats that were lined up on the countertop.

Erica's thoughts drifted to the last time she had been in the room and eyed the containment units that were on the side of the room. "Is it safe?" she asked.

"We've gone over everything," Jake reassured her. "Our nanobots don't have the same weakness in their integrity from the magnetic fields that our liquid metal did. These vats are constructed from stainless steel, so we had to make sure that the science was stable."

Bob continued explaining. "The nanobots were derived from the findings of our liquid metal experiments, but we need to store them at supercool temperatures to render them inert, and stainless steel containers are the standard for storing things at that temperature. Like liquid Nitrogen."

"Nope. Nothing has changed. I still can't understand what they're trying to explain." Erica thought to herself.

Nancy looked around, taking everything in. "Why do the nanobots need to be inert?" she asked her boyfriend.

"There are so many applications that we can use these nanobots for. Because of that, we programmed them with the most basic of firmware and designed them to pick up on verbal commands," Jake told her. "We can't chance them picking up on everything that is said out loud."

Erica wandered around the lab and found one of the stainless steel vats that was damaged. There was a blue gelatinous stuff leaking out of it. "Hey Bob," she called to him. "What is this blue stuff?"

Bob and Jake rushed over to the table. "That... is not good..." Bob exclaimed. "Jake, suit up! We need to dispose of this batch before their programming kicks in." The two of them rushed to put on their suits.

Nancy moved to stand next to Erica. "Are those the nanobots?" she asked.

Erica shrugged. "I have no idea."
