Chapter 21 by android1966 android1966

Does Naerwyn complete her quest too?

Naerwyn finds a chest.

Naerwyn tosses the bloodied dagger onto the bed with a look of disgust and turns away to begin rifling through the warlord's belongings. The Akkadian supposes her search may take some minutes despite her experiance at thievery as Trimon's bedchamber is quite large and filled with the choicest spoils of his banditry. The assassin uses this time to pose the warlord's corpse, so that to a casual glance he seems to be naturally resting and the gaping wound from his slit throat is hidden. This done, the Akkadian picks up the discarded dagger and carefully cleans Trimon's blood from the invisable blade. Though hating magic and magical artifacts the assassin pragmatically realises the invisable weapon's value.

"Aha, this could be it." The thief exclaims after several minutes of searching.

Naerwyn drags out a small, but sturdy looking metal casket from behind a large dresser. Pulling the chest into the centre of the room the auburn rogue inspects the chest, taking care not to touch anywhere near the locking mechanism.

"Yes, this looks promising." Naerwyn mutters. "Double trapped, on the lock and the clasp. Whatever is in here Trimon valued greatly."

"If this contains Trimon's most valued treasure then it is likely he kept the key on his person." The Akkadian suggests to his companion.

"Precisely so Minaja." Naerwyn agrees with a smile. "You seem to have a quick grasp of the logic of a thief."

The assassin shrugs, whether the final goal is **** or robbery he supposes the ability to get inside a target's mind and deduce how they think and act is similar. Naerwyn meanwhile has searched Trimon's discarded clothing and discovered a key in a small hidden pouch on his belt. Returning to the casket she runs her hands over the chest, pressing and probing around the sides. An audible click is soon heard.

"That is the lock trap disarmed." Naerwyn explains. "Now it is safe to use the key, then the clasp trap needs disarming before the clasp can open."

The thief unlocks the chest and explores it some more, humming to herself and frowning in concentration. Finally she presses a section of the engraved patterning and a second click is heard. Naerwyn lifts the clasp, but instead of opening the chest she examines the area beneath the clasp previously hidden. Getting a pinch of dust she blows on her fingers so that the dust drifts onto the metalwork that was beneath the clasp.

"Oh very sneaky." Naerwyn comments with admiration. "A third trap, this time a magical ward. This needs Trimon's own touch to negate it."

The assassin looks beside him at the warlord's corpse. Taking Trimon's hand his uses the dagger to slice off one of the warlord's fingers and tosses the amputated digit to Naerwyn, who catches it with a look of surprise at her friend's casual dismemberment of the warlord's body.

"Easier than shifting the whole thing I suppose." Naerwyn admits, looking at the finger she holds.

The rogue presses the pad of the fingertip onto the magical ward and a brief flare of light is emitted as the magical ward is negated. After one final carefull inspection Naerwyn lifts the lid of the casket and peers inside with the assassin craning forward to see from the bed.

What is inside?
