Chapter 131

What do you take care of next?
Meeting Megan’s parents.
One day, Megan finally tells you that her parents are ready to meet you. You ask her how they took the revelation, and if she went through with telling them about her being bi and going out with Emily.
“I told them.” She says, cuddling with you on the mattress in your room. You’re both still in your school uniforms.
It’s just the two of you now, which doesn’t happen often but is always welcomed.
“My dad was… not very supportive.” She gives you a weak smile. “My mom managed to calm him down though. In the end, I spoke to her alone and the she spoke to my dad. My mom has been very supportive though. She’s a lot more open minded than my dad, which sometimes makes them fight. Nothing major, thankfully. Mom says that so long as I’m happy and take responsibility for my decisions, she’ll support me.”
“So, it’s your dad I have to be worried about?”
“A little?” Megan nods slowly, tracing a finger along your chest. “They know I’m not your only girlfriend, but my dad is more concerned about me going out with both you and another woman. At least since it’s Emily he didn’t throw as big a fit as he could have. He’s known her for years. Still, we want to have a separate conversation with him as well, but only when he accepts it.”
“So, what’s my role here?” You ask her. “What would you like me to do?”
Megan smiles shyly at you. “I… want you to win him over. I was thinking that if he comes to like you, he’ll be more willing to accept my decision.”
So it’s time to wield your power for Megan’s sake this time. You’re fine with that. You’ll be the best not-yet-son-in-law he’ll ever have. Well, ideally, you’ll be the only one he’ll ever have.
The bus drive to Megan’s house is spent with you two tightly holding each other’s hand, reminiscent of the trip to Sophia’s house. Your girlfriend is nervous, and the problem is she’s making you more nervous than you already are. You try your best to LOOK calm though, for both of your sakes.
The bus leaves you about ten minutes away from Megan’s house, she tells you, so now you have to walk. You hold hands all the way there, and some people that know her stop you to greet her a few times and tease her about you.
Megan takes a deep breath before opening the door to her two-story house and tells you to come in. The place gives off a very comfortable, homey feeling. Like, you know, an actual home instead of a refurbished shed.
Red tiled floor, wooden paneling and something you find interesting is that most of the furniture look like antiques. Hey, there’s even an old telephone with a rotary dial on top of an ancient looking table. You think those are called cabriole legs.
Though without a doubt, the weirdest thing is not the phone or the table, but the other things on top of it. No, they’re not weird, they’re just completely out of place. You just never expected to see model kits of a couple of old cars, airplanes, the motherfucking MILLENNIUM FALCON and a GUNDAM.
You stand in front of them with wide eyes and a half-open mouth, admiring their beauty.
“Don’t touch those! My dad gets really mad when I do.” The sheepish look on Megan’s face wordlessly says she must have broken one at some point.
“These are you dad’s!?” You ask, baffled.
“Y-Yeah.” She nods. “You know them?”
“Not the cars, but who doesn’t recognize the original RX-78-2 Gundam and the freaking Millennium Falcon!?”
Megan tilts her head in confusion, apparently not knowing what you’re talking about.
You sigh. She needs to talk to her father more. You’ll give her the gundam, but not knowing the millennium falcon!?
“Mom, dad! We’re here!” Megan calls loudly. You see her mother coming out of the kitchen and her father coming down from the second floor.
“So you’re David. Nice to meet you. I’m Megan’s mother, Amelia.” Mrs. Grant greets you with a kind smile that easily allows you to see the resemblance between her and her daughter. She looks to be around her 50s. “Please, take a seat at the table while I serve dinner. Do you like salmon?”
“Nice to meet you, Mrs. Grant. And yes, I love salmon.” You answer with an eager nod.
You turn to her approaching father. He’s taller than you and has an impressive muscular frame. He clearly lifts more on one hand than you can with two. His stern eyes look you up and down, silently but very clearly judging you.
“Dad!” Megan calls him out on it, and the big man sighs.
“I’m Leonard Grant.” He extends his hand to greet you.
“David Walker. Nice to meet you, Mr. Grant.” You say, shaking his hand. His grip is strong enough to hurt, but you manage to take it unflinchingly and return it firmly, though not nearly as strongly.
Is this seriously the man who has all those model kits?
You and Mr. Grant take your seats in the dining room table while Megan and her mother bring the food.
You want to start the conversation by bringing up the model kits, but Mr. Grant’s highly intimidating aura stops you. He doesn’t say anything either. Even when the food arrives and you all start eating, the awkward silence remains until Mrs. Grant starts asking questions.
“So tell us, David. Where do you live?”
How to answer that?
“In a small room close to the school. I’m not from this town, and since there’re no male dorms here they gave me that place.”
“And why are you studying at an all-girls academy, Mr. Walker?” Mr. Grant asks, though it sounds more like an accusation.
You smile wryly. “My father’s idea. Apparently, he knows the headmistress and convinced her to allow me in. I’ve heard that it was only allowed because other teachers want the school to become co-ed.”
Mr. Grant scoffs at that. “That’s just great. We pick Hayes BECAUSE it’s girls only and now they start allowing guys in.” He groans.
Mrs. Grant ignores her husband and keeps asking questions. She asks where you’re originally from, about your father and the rest of your family. This might actually be the first time Megan (or any of the girls) have heard that you also have an older brother.
Eventually though, she runs out of questions and the tense atmosphere returns. Mr. Grant keeps eyeing you, judging your every move. It makes you watch your table manners like never before. Megan looks at you apologetically, so deciding that there’s nothing that can make this worse, you ask.
“I saw the model kits by the entrance. Megan told me they’re yours, Mr. Grant.”
He nods, and you want to believe his expression is less hostile and that his wife is suppressing a smile.
“Did you build them yourself? The Millennium Falcon is impressive.”
The big man coughs to clear his throat before answering. “I did. And yes, that ship is one of my favorites.”
“The RX-78-2 Gundam is beautiful though. I’ve always wanted to build gunpla myself, but I’m not really good at crafts.”
Mr. Grant blinks several times trying to process what he just heard. The hostility in his eyes is completely gone.
“You’ve… watched Mobile Suit Gundam?” He asks.
“Yeah. I’m a huge fan of the mecha genre.” You nod, trying not to grin like an idiot and failing miserably.
“Leonard is, too.” Mrs. Grant chuckles. “He has a full collection of DVDs and Blu-ray Disks of his favorite shows.”
Your head quickly turns to Megan. “You told me you didn’t know these shows!”
“W-well, I’ve never watched them!” She argues back.
“How could you have a full collection at your own house and not get a little curious?” You try not to be too loud, but it’s hard to believe that, with her father knowing all this, Megan had never heard about them.
“I’ve been trying to get her to watch these with me since she was a kid, but she always refuses!” Her father tells you, obviously frustrated. “I always encouraged her love for sports, but she ended up having a one-track mind for her tastes.” He shakes his head.
“But what about Captain Tsubasa! Slam Dunk! Prince of Tennis!” You ask him, clearly feeling his frustration.
“They all look the same to her! She says it’s not real sport and won’t so much as try them!”
The table slowly but surely becomes livelier by the minute with you and Mr. Grant talking of both how neither of you can get Megan to watch a show with you and what your favorites are. Mr. Grant loves a lot of old school stuff and hasn’t watched newer things. He used to watch these shows as a kid and got back into them when she saw Megan watching cartoons as a kid.
His hostility towards you is completely gone, and Megan looks at you talking to her father like an old friend with a stunned expression.
“Megan, help me with the dishes while the boys talk.” Mrs. Grant laughs as she and her daughter go to the kitchen.
Once alone, Mr. Grant sighs heavily and looks at you straight in the eye.
“When Megan told us she had a boyfriend for months now, I was mad. Not only was our daughter hiding things from us, I could only imagine the kind of guy that had his hands on my little girl. When I saw you, I feared the worst. I’ve seen guys like you play with women and throw them out like yesterday’s garbage. Hell, I used to be friends with people like that. Many of them.”
You stop him. “What do you mean guys like me?”
“You look like you work out. You look like the type.”
Huh? “Did… did Megan tell you how we met?”
He grimaces and massages the back of his neck. “She didn’t. I guess I was too mad to let her say much.”
“She and Emily helped me start working out. Our P.E. teacher appointed me as their tutor and them as my trainers. I was a wet noodle before meeting them. A very nerdy wet noodle.”
“I see.” He nods. “Sorry. My bad for jumping to conclusions.”
“Still, I want you to know that your daughter means the world to me. I can promise that. I don’t mind if you’re warry of me. All I ask is that you give me a chance. I swear I’m not playing with her.”
“And your other girlfriends?” He asks in a tone that unnerves you a little. The normalized polyamory trait said that everyone thinks that having multiple girlfriends is normal, but Mr. Grant seems skeptical.
“Is my daughter first? Second? Last?”
Ah. You get it now.
“First. Just like everyone else. They come first, I go second.”
Mr. Grant groans at your response. “Fine. I’ll believe you for now. But if you hurt my daughter…!”
“If I hurt your daughter I’ll come here on my own and ask you to beat me to a pulp.”
“And I will.” He tells you. Then he looks towards the kitchen, and when he sees his wife and daughter are still in the kitchen, he asks grimacing. “Hey… so it’s true that Megan is bisexual, right?”
You nod. “Yes. Does it bother you?” You ask, trying to sound sympathetic.
“I don’t know.” He shakes his head. “I love my daughter no matter what, but I feel like it might have been my fault. I was so afraid of her getting hurt by men that I always put her in all-girls schools. Look how that turned out.”
You give the big man a wry smile. “I can’t speak for how she’s at home, but… I know Megan is happy with how she is. She’s relieved she can be herself, not having to hide her feelings anymore.”
“I know.” He admits. “She’s been so much cheerful recently. Probably since she started going out with you, so… thank you for that.” He gives you a kind, thankful smile.
The rest of the evening goes on quietly, with Megan’s parents having accepted you. Your girlfriend is very relieved at that. You return home, saying goodbye to Megan with a tame kiss on the forehead.
On the bus ride back, you check on the scores of Megan’s parents.
