Who to follow?

Married 35 Year Old Manager with Kids

You’re Kevin and you’ve just been promoted to manager at Silver Financial. The air in the open-plan office hums with quiet focus, the soft glow of monitors reflecting off polished desks. You take your seat in the row, right alongside the team you now lead—a dozen financial advisors, most of whom happen to be women. A few are fresh out of college, their enthusiasm still bright and unjaded.

You’ve been married to Sarah for ten years, since you were both seniors in college. At home, there are crayon drawings on the fridge and two small voices that call you “Dad.” Your six-year-old is starting to read chapter books; your three-year-old believes every puddle is an ocean to be splashed in. You carry them with you, a quiet anchor in the bustle of the workday.

Your team respects you. They know you’re fair, that you put in the hours, that you’ll fight for their commissions and cover for them when a client turns difficult. You earned this promotion.

And yet, you notice things.

You notice how Emily, with her blonde hair tied in a sleek ponytail, explains a complex bond strategy with such clarity that the client on the phone actually laughs in relief. You notice how Maya, the new hire from Kansas, stays an hour late every day to review her portfolios, her head bent intently over the spreadsheets. You notice the easy confidence of Lena, a former collegiate runner, as she strides to the presentation room, her focus absolute.

They are, objectively, an attractive group—vibrant, sharp, put-together. They fit a certain mold: young, intelligent, with a professional polish that speaks of ambition. You are aware of this in a distant, observational way, like noting the weather outside the window.

What are you up to?
