What happens next?
Making camp
Stopping to study the map every so often as she and Janette followed the trail through the landscape, Druuna felt certain that they were on the right track, but she was also pretty certain that it would take more than two days to reach the warehouse.
Thankful that she had used some caps to supplement the rations which Janette had bought for them earlier, Druuna spent the monotonous journey getting to know her partner better. Keeping their conversation focused on lighter matters than family, Druuna and Janette were both starting to feel as if they were old friends by the time that the sun began to set beyond the horizon.
Realizing that it would be dark soon, Druuna told Janette that they would make camp in a small valley just a few hundred yards ahead of their current position on a slope and proceeded to lead her apprentice there.
The area in which they were camping was quite a lush one, and Druuna reckoned that plenty of vegetables, fruit and berries could be found to make their supper better rounded. Sending Janette out on a foraging mission, Druuna set up a small fireplace to make up the centre of their campsite, right next to a narrow stream in which clear water streamed slowly.
With twigs which she had gathered from the surrounding area, Druuna got a fire going and settled down on her ass in the soft sand.
Placing her pan on the fire, Druuna rummaged through her pack to find the prepared part of tonight’s dinner; an old can that had been re-packed and re-sealed. Looking at the image of a happy dog which took up the front of the can, Druuna was relieved that the can didn’t contain its original content.
After pouring the mixture of chunky pieces of meat, mushrooms and brown sauce from the can into the pan, Druuna felt her nostrils widen as the smell of her cooking rose from the pan.
Just as the food looked ready to be eaten Janette returned from her foraging trip, carrying with her a plentiful gathering of fruit and berries.
“There,” Janette spoke to Druuna, sounding not a little pleased with herself, “look what I found!”
“Very good.” Druuna said with a chuckle, eyeing the food as Janette placed it next to the fireplace.
It was only after distributing the contents of the pan onto their tin plates that Druuna took a closer look at the foodstuff which Janette had brought to camp.
Druuna’s mouth shaped itself into a naughty grin as she noticed over a dozen bushels of small, bright orange berries. Janette had picked what accounted to a deadly dose of the Orange Skinheaters which Druuna had encountered earlier.
Those could serve as a very handy ice-breaker between her and Janette, Druuna thought, and as a way to release the sexual tension between the two which she felt certain existed.
“What are you smiling about?” Janette asked Druuna, sounding very cheerful.
Does Druuna tell Janette about the Skinheaters?
