My phone buzzes. It is a call from Penelope. I had better take it right away.

“Hello, Penelope,” I say pleasantly as I head to the locker room.

“Warren. I just had brunch with Vikki.”

That’s right! Victoria’s mother offered to give me backchannel information about my continued employment if I got the two of them on speaking terms again. I sit on a bench and lean forward. “And how did it go?”

“Turbulent as ever. She did say a few interesting things that pertain to you.”

I hate it already. “I’m all ears.”
