After everyone left, I helped Casey to clean up the place. Sarah tried to help but Casey stopped her by telling her that the birthday girl shouldn't be doing this. Sarah still insisted to help but stopped when Casey threaten to kick her ass.
After all the chores were done, Sarah's parents pulled us into the living room. We saw that our family members were also there, including Casey. We were confused about what is going on. Even my parents were nervous.
Sarah's mom finally cleared her throat to get our attention. Her dad laid down on the couch with a somber look.
"This is going to be hard to say..." as soon as she said that, tears started forming. I looked at Sarah who just shrugged at me.
"Your pregnancy announcement is one of the best news we have heard in a long time." Sarah's mom started. She slightly paused. "THE best news we heard." she let out a shuddering sigh. I knew she was trying to hold back from an emotional breakdown.
"Mom, what's wrong?" Sarah delicately asked.
"I have cancer." her dad bluntly answered. Everyone's jaw dropped to the ground and Sarah's eyes widened. She slowly started towards her dad.
"Daddy. Are you being serious?" Sarah whimpered. Tears started falling down her face.
"I tried to fight it but it is too strong. My chances of living another three years are slim." He paused. "That's why I retired from working. I saved enough money for you in my banking account and hope you put it to good use."
Sarah broke down and bawled. I felt numb and I bet my parents felt the same also. Sarah's mom held on to her husband. The room was quiet except for Sarah's crying and the occasional sniffle.
"At least I will alive long enough to see my future grandchild. Jake take good care of Sarah and that kid." he remarked with a grin. Sarah forced a smile and I shook his hand.
"I will sir." I replied. I tried really hard to choke back my tears.
"Now everyone get out of here so I could talk to my wife." he said. We all quietly left the house and back to my own. I had my left arm around Sarah the entire walk. She was really quiet. She clutched my waist for dear life.
