Chapter 24
by Nom Nom Nom de Plume
What is your first step?
Land and Find a Cantina, of Course
You step off of your ship and into the spaceport, located in a bustling city named Mos Espa, and instantly regret coming here. The two suns should have tipped you off, but this planet is unbearably hot. You are immediately soaked in sweat beneath your layers of armor and clothing. You suspect the open air docking station would be expensive to effectively cool, so the port master likely just doesn't.
You head inside as quickly as possible, leaving Rogo to handle negotiations about docking fees. Timik seems to have found a friend, a strange little man even smaller than the Chadra-Fan with eyes glowing beneath his drawn hood. Their conversation is a mix of chitters and squeels, and the two go scurrying off to pick at a heap of discarded electronics and droid parts.
A Toydarian merchant in one of the port shops is calling at new arrivals, advertising desert gear. You buy a sturdy, wide brimmed hat to keep the sun from beating down on your head, and to shield your eyes from the glare. The Toydarian tries to upsell you on an expensive and elaborate suit he claims will help you "reclaim all of your moisture", a process that sounds unpleasant enough to earn a hard pass. You do take his advice on a pair of shaded goggles and a heavy wrap for your mouth, to keep sand from blowing in your eyes and mouth if you get caught in a storm.
The station opens up to a bustling little sprawl, merchants loudly calling out in half a dozen languages offering everything from clothes and jewelry, to scrimshaw and strange smelling foods, to droids at low, low prices. You wander the bazaar aimlessly for a bit, getting a feel for the people and layout of the city. Tekka is on your arm and looking about in wide eyed delight. She's dressed more for the environment than you are, a short linen tunic of a dress cinched tight with a gold chain to show off her tiny waist and highlight her curves. The front dips deeply down, exposing the valley between her breasts and past her navel. You'd actually rather she be covered up more; not that she would take fashion advice from you, but slavery is an institution here, and Twi'lek **** girls are some of the most valued. She practically looks the part and you don't need anyone getting ideas, but she was oddly insistent.
You spot a flashing neon sign in a language you can't read, but its design (a dancing girl, the neon in one leg flickering inconsistently) and the shambles of a building it hangs on tells you everything you need to know. That is definately a cantina, likely one classified as a full on dive. Your kind of place.
The cantina is blessedly cooler than the outside. The place is buzzing with raucous music, and dangerous looking aliens drink, laugh, and fight in various booths and alcoves. You find a quiet looking booth with your back to a wall, and plan out your next move.
You flip through the local bounty lists on your data pad, showing Tekka which high value jobs definately have other dangerous rivals already dispatched, and which words to be on the lookout for to spot an an employer has no intention of actually paying you.
You order drinks from a scantily clad Rodian waitress, who blushes when you smile and take a moment to look her over. She has a nice slim figure and surprisingly full rear, and she would probably be very attractive if not for the whole 'being a Rodian' thing. You'd bet by her reaction she doesn't get this kind if attention as much as her more humanoid coworkers. Still, waitresses overhear lots of information, and she might make a willing informant if you're willing to lower your standards a little.
You could take a job from the bounty board. There's no shortage of publicly posted work here, but there's likely to be more competition. You might put in a lot of work and have the bounty scooped out from underneath you.
You could also quietly spread the word you're a bounty hunter available for hire and see what shows up. Private contracts tend to pay well, and usually mean you don't need to worry about rivals stealing your job or shooting you in the back. The client that shows up does tend to vary based on your reputation though.
You suppose you could also just have a good time today. There's no shortage of drinking games, gambling, and other debauchery going on here. You never know where a night of drinking might lead you.
How do you find your next job?
