Chapter 8
by vanillathunder
What kind of room was it?
Kinda girly, but mostly gender-neutral (Originally by Lord of the Pies)
It wasn't too bad, the room could have been much girlier. The room was large and shaped like a sideways L. The door was at the center of the long side of it. There was a large four poster bed at the turn with light pink sheets. At the end of the long side was a desk with some papers, a lamp, and a few electronic components. In between there was a pair of bean bag chairs and a medium sized Tv built into the wall. There was also a small bookshelf and an end-table next to the bed, the second of which had something screen-like built into the top. Sam walked in and around the corner. It turned out that the room was more U shaped, and turning the corner led to another corner (and a vanity), which led to a bathroom with tub and shower. Filling up the space between the two parts of the room was an enormous walk-in-closet accessed by a sliding door near the bathroom. Overall, excluding the pink sheets and a few scattered plushies and posters, the room wasn't too girly. Curious, he went over to the end-table with the odd screen on top. The top rotated, and he turned it so the single button faced himself as he squatted on the floor. Pressing the button, he was greeted by the appearance of a holographic screen floating before his face.
"Wicked..." He breathed, impressed by the tech.
It presented him with a simple login page.
USER: AMY GLADSTONE
PASS:
Normally he would have stopped, morality kicking in and telling him not to go poking around in what was apparently his cousins personal computer. But the sudden occurrence of an idea made him pause. If he could get into the computer systems before his and Kyle's profiles were finished, he could play his best prank ever. Driven by his newfound idea, even as it was still forming in his head, he began the task of deciphering the password of girl he'd met once or twice nearly ten years before.
He started with the basics: "password", "amy", "amygladstone", before he realized that a tech-savvy girl like her would never use something so obvious. He looked around the room for inspiration. Noticing a popular boy band poster on the wall, he remembered an old trick a friend from school had once told him. Complex passwords filled with symbols and numbers swapped with letters are both hard to remember and really easy for hacking software to crack. But, a combination of even just four short random words can be easily remembered by a image or mnemonic device, yet are ridiculously hard to crack with a computer. Remembering this, he decided to try the names of the band.
With the names of the band's members in mind, he got the password right in four attempts, just before it would have locked him out of the system. What appeared was like a regular desktop screen, but in three dimensions. With a bit of hunting, he managed to find a "House Systems" folder. From there, through trial and elimination, he worked his way through "House Systems", "MARCI", "Operating Files", "Users". At "Users" he had an immense stroke of luck. Uncle Mark had apparently began making user accounts for him and Kyle, but had stopped after only their names and pictures. Entering Kyle's User controls, he created a hidden folder and opened Notepad. Quickly, he wrote out a paragraph of code indecipherable to any normal person, but clear as day to him. When he was finished, he saved it as a ".bat" file so the computer would run it as a program.
It was a simple virus really, but once it was activated, its effects would readily become apparent. Wanting the program to stay secret as long as possible, he decided to change Amy's password. He would never even consider doing such a thing normally, but he was more focused on **** than ethics. Besides, she'd be gone for over two months. It's not like she'd be logging in anytime soon. He glanced around the room for inspiration. Glancing to a pile of books by the bed he decided, on a whim, to use the first word in every title. The end result was over seventy characters long; almost guaranteed uncrackable.
Content in his security and his program, he logged out of the computer, and left the room to explore the rest of the house, reminding himself to make sure to insist that he should get Sami's room later.
