Paul relaxes a little when he sees the familiar mangy brown hair of his old partner Kara. Paul and her have known each other for about a year now. When she first wound up on the streets they met because she was 19 and asked him to buy her some booze. That night him and her hooked up and they spent about a month together.
Paul hasn't seen Kara since the night he watched her get put in the back of a squad car. They were outside the gas station with the cheap vodka, when two guys she knew from school asked him to go in for them and buy them a bottle. When he got done buying his booze, Paul left the store only to see the guys were yelling insults at Kara. They called her names like worthless whore and one of them got behind her and started fondling her breasts over her coat.
Kara elbowed the guy and knocked him to the ground. It was just bad luck there was a couple of cops patrolling down the road at the time who saw her lay him out. Turns out the cops in this town don't like when you knock out a councilman's son, so Kara wound up getting hauled off while her attackers got to play the victim.
