Chapter 19 by MidbossMan MidbossMan

Who will you speak to?

Join Au Revoir in neutralizing the super weapon and hear her thoughts on Despedida...

It could have been easy to lose track of Au Revoir in the dark elevator shaft, but thankfully, you knew where she must be headed: she was going to ensure the destruction of the super weapon you'd all come here to take care of. Going out there also reminded you that the air down here was getting pretty thin and, furthermore, you had no assurance that the bottom level was clear of Deliverers... it would be sensible to tag along to cover her. You left Despedida to tinker with her drones while you followed Au Revoir.

After traveling through a long, empty, slightly ablaze hallway, lit by both flames and spinning red danger lights, you found Au Revoir in the process of fiddling with some computer terminal, which was dwarfed by her massive hands. The terminal appeared to be connected to a giant machine that looked a bit like the whole-room computers that were used before technology was miniaturized... only, each computer was connected to a huge tank of nitroglycerin. You asked her what she was doing.

"I am looking for a self destruct feature on this super weapon, New Ciao."

She sounded pretty grumpy, but also, dangerously impatient. You warned her that the self-destruct on something like this could blow New York City sky high, even if the weapon wasn't complete. She grunted, but agreed to step aside and let you fiddle with the machine instead. With a sense of urgency searched for some non-lethal way of disarming the weapon and rendering it permanently impotent. Nathaniel Speck was no Despedida, but he had enough CEDIT tech training that he could hack his way through the Deliverer's attempts at encryption.

Thus distracted, you made time to address Au Revoir's concerns as well and asked her what all was on her mind.

"... Was just thinking... You know, I talked big about trusting all of my teammates but... this is the first failed mission we Goodbye Girls have experienced in quite some time. It has me pissed."

You told her that was understandable, but then reminded her that you all had, after all, destroyed both a Deliverer base, several enemy agents, and finally, gotten your hands on the super weapon to take it out of commission for good. It was hardly a failed mission.

"Maybe not for you, New Ciao, but this is not to our standard." Frowning, the big woman tapped her fingers up and down on her biceps. "I am worried. About Despedida."

You felt yourself beginning to sweat and tried not to look too anxious at hearing Au Revoir's earnest appraisal of the likelihood that Despedida was the mole.

"Those messages came from her drones, no? That means she must be Namaste. Only Despedida knows how to make those computers and robots do those things. Aaah, I do not understand the things she says, with all the games and the nonsense, but I have always thought she was a good girl. Now... I am not so sure. I am not so sure she is my ally... And I am not so sure she did not kill our former handlers. Technology is almost like magic, oui? It makes killing easy... But I do not want to mistrust my friends."

The words surprised you. You'd been under the impression all of the Goodbye Girls were pretty impersonal towards one another... after all, half of their field operatives wore near full face masks 24/7. You pressed her on the subject.

"Yes, New Ciao, I said friends. Does it really seem so strange that I think of them this way? We complete the most dangerous missions in modern law together, oui? It is only natural that I want to think of them as my comrades. I want to think of you the same way..."

You told Au Revoir that unfortunately, being suspicious is part of the nature of spy work. You even went as far as to tell her that as her handler, you were watching her and everyone else with those same suspicions.

"... The deception I would rather leave to Vaarvel." The big woman sighed, looking troubled. "At the very least... you will be Au Revoir's friend, oui? I want you to see the Goodbye Girls at their best and to love them as much as I do. I make jokes, but I do not want you to die like other handlers, New Ciao. Stick close to Au Revoir and she will protect you." With a sad smile, she threw an arm around you and hugged you in tightly; you felt yourself smushed against the warmth of her huge arm muscles, but also, the softness of her breasts. Too many hugs like this and she might just kill you by accident...

Still... You didn't want to think that this sometimes gentle, sometimes blood-thirsty giant was the sleeper agent. Today's events had made Au Revoir suspect Despedida, because of the technological prowess that Namaste and Despedida both shared. You weren't sure what to think just yet... but you knew you had to record this in the dossiers when you got back.

What comes next?
