What do I decide to do next?
Interrogate the barbarians captured the preceding day
I inquired by Ruleus about the place where the barbarian prisoners were detained. He indicated me the dungeons stretching under the governor's residence, and I proceeded there immediately, thinking that there would be interesting informations to collect.
Someone was already trying. The governor's dungeons looked like an antechamber of Tartarus. Whip, barbed stick and red hot iron were unleashed on the bodies of the unfortunate prisoners. Screams, moanings and supplications echoed from everywhere. The governor in person was supervising the work of his tormentors. As soon as he saw me, he came to me grinning.
"Good morning, general. When I heard that the barbarians were planning a new attack, I immediately ordered to put these on the rack. But they are quite hard to make speak. Two of them are already dead, and I don't know much more about their chieftain's identity of intentions." He pointed at a prisoner quite different from the others.
It was a woman, tall and athletic, hanged by her chained hands at a hook in the ceiling. Her naked body displayed, on the bust, shoulders, arms and legs, the characteristic tattoos of the barbarian warriors. It displayed too, almost everywhere, the red marks of a recent whipping. In spite of her obvious suffering, the woman's eyes were still flashing and fierce.
"Who is she?" I asked.
"She has been made prisoner yesterday with the others. Didn't you notice her? Those barbarians are really crazy, sending women to the battle! However, I heard she was quite hard to vanquish. She killed four legionnaries before being taken."
The governor faced the woman with a vicious smile.
"Nevertheless, this night she has been mine. I needed the help of my personal guards to tie her before" (and actually I saw, on the governor's fleshy face and neck, some scraps and bruises which weren't there the preceding evening). "I left her to them afterwards, they deserved something for their assistance."
If the prisoner's eyes had been bows, the governor would have been transfixed by a volley of arrows.
"And now she's there, but the whip didn't draw many words from her."
