Chapter 123 by fantaghiro
What's next?
Inside, you speak with Dr. Kerry and Dr. Saunders
Finding Dr. Kerry and Dr. Saunder's office without too much problem (Randall having visited them here before), you took a moment outside to discuss what exactly you were going to tell them. Figuring that although they were professionals and the whole doctor/patient confidentiality thing existed, it probably wasn't a wise move letting them know you were the father. Nor that you'd been sleeping together. Not just yet anyway.
"We'll just tell 'em you came along for support or something," Randall decided. Having not made any mention of you when he'd spoken to Saunders over the phone.
Agreeing with this, you then knocked on the door and were greeted by the familiar and friendly face of Dr. Saunders.
"Ah, Miss. Card," he smiled. Pausing momentarily when he saw you. "... And Tim." Appearing slightly surprised by your presence. "It's good to see you both again." Ushering you quickly inside, where Dr. Kerry also greeted you from behind a desk. Closing the door, Saunders then offered you both a seat. Apologizing that they couldn't have seen Randall sooner, before adding in a much more serious tone, "I assume Tim here already knows about everything we discussed on the phone."
Randall nodded an affirmative. "Yeah, he knows." Reiterating what you'd both discussed outside, that you were here for "moral support".
Thankfully neither of them seemed too bothered by this. Saunders having been a staunch supporter of your continued friendship to begin with. Asking you then if you had managed to maintain it these past few months, given the circumstances.
"As best we can, yeah," you answered for the both of yous. Not really seeing the need to go any deeper than this. The sex and the fact that you had both been keeping it a secret from everyone else wasn't really important right now. And definitely not the reason you were here.
"Well, that's good news," he said. "Such friendships are hard to come by and shouldn't be so lightly discarded." His opinion being way different from your mom's. "Now, onto the matter at hand. You said on the phone, Randall, that you'd already taken a pregnancy test and received a positive result. Is that right?"
"Yeah. On Friday."
"I see. And I assume you've been sexually active."
Blushing at this and averting his gaze, Randall replied, "Uhm, yeah. A few times." Clearly embarrassed. Feeling much the same way yourself.
"Well that was to be expected," the older doctor said. Showing no judgment at all. Assuring him in fact that, "There's really no need to be embarrassed. Though can I ask, did you use protection?"
Admitting that he hadn't, at least not the first time, Randall then began to describe as best he could all the various things that had led him to believe he was pregnant. Such as the size increase in his belly these past few weeks, as well as the fact that, although he hadn't initially noticed, he'd also seemingly missed a few periods as well. You meanwhile, just sat there and listened. Wishing that they could just hurry up past all this stuff you already knew and onto you and Randall's options.
It was obvious though that the doctors wanted to know all the facts first. The two of them pondering this for a moment before Kerry finally spoke up. "I see. And have you experienced any other symptoms? Nausea? Headaches? Back ache? Swollen or tender breasts? Anything like that?"
"Yeah, all of them in fact," Randall nodded. "Although the sickness hasn't really been all that bad for a while now. I actually thought that was something else to be honest with you..." Too much **** and partying, if you remembered correctly. It suddenly making a whole lot more sense why he was throwing up all the time.
The two of them appeared somewhat surprised by this though. Glancing at each other for a moment, before Saunders looked back towards Randall and asked, "Would it... would it be alright with you if we took a little look at your stomach?"
"Sure."
Leading him over to the nearby examination table then, Randall hopped up onto it and lifted his blouse. Allowing them both an unrestricted view of his rounded little belly while you just sat there and watched. The two doctors proceeding, over the course of the next ten minutes, to examine it with both their hands and with Dr. Kerry's stethoscope. Asking a few more questions while they did. Such as, how long ago did the initial sexual encounter first take place. Randall's face once again turning red when he revealed that it wasn't long after getting out of hospital (thankfully not saying it was that very same night). After this, they began conferring with one another in the corner while Randall pulled his blouse back down and retook his seat. There voices, while hushed, definitely having some kind of debate, and Dr. Saunders looking quite flustered indeed.
Curious to know what was going on and finding your patience beginning to wear very thin indeed, you piped up then and asked, "Is... is everything okay?" Fearing that there might be something wrong with the baby... or Randall.
"Yes, yes," Kerry replied in his usual abrupt manner. Turning back to you both. "Everything is fine. We'd just like to perform a ultrasound if that's okay with Randall. See if we can't have a little look at what's going on in there."
Though appearing similarly concerned himself as to what was going on, Randall agreed to this, and not ten minutes later Kerry returned to the office, wheeling in a machine in that you'd seen many times before in TV shows and movies. Getting Randall to lay down this time on the table, while Kerry connected it all up, Saunders pulled out some sort of weird jelly stuff and squirted it onto his stomach (which was obviously cold due to your friend's reaction), before then running a probe like device across it's surface. The resulting image being projected onto a small screen in a slightly fuzzy and unclear manner.
"Ah..." was the less than encouraging sound that came out of his mouth as you all stared up at the vague little shape on the screen. Glancing towards Kerry then, who similarly looked similarly lost for words.
"What? What is it?" Randall asked. Looking at the two of them, then back at the screen. "Is... is that it? Is that little blob a baby?"
"Yes. Yes it is," Saunders replied. Trying his best to cover up whatever it was that was bothering him. "You are indeed pregnant, just as you thought."
Naturally this didn't really come as any kind of surprise to either of you. Simply confirming what you already knew. The image on the ultrasound however was a different story. Finding yourself staring at the weird miniature human-like shape almost in disbelief. Not entirely sure what you were feeling. That's a freaking baby. That's our freaking baby! It really was amazing.
"There's more to it than that though," Kerry interjected. Looking slightly uncomfortable. Just like he had back when he'd first told you about Randall and the brain transplant.
Obviously picking up on this, Randall quickly tore his eyes from the screen. "What do you mean more? Is there something wrong with it?" His voice growing a little panicked.
"No, nothing like that. It appears perfectly healthy as far as we can see," he responded. This, strangely enough, causing a sigh of relief to escape your body. Having been worried for a second there. Dr. Kerry meanwhile didn't seem quite so happy. Fiddling nervously with his glasses and clearing his throat as he continued. "It's just that the fetus...well, it can't be any less than five months old. And your pregnancy is quite clearly in the second trimester."
Both yours and Randall's reaction to this was pretty much the same. Stunned confusion. Randall however managing to speak up first.
"But that's not even possible. I've not even been in this body three months. How can I be five months pregnant?" It of course suddenly dawning on him a second later, "Unless..."
"Unless Miss. Card was already pregnant before the accident," Saunders finished the thought.
This news completely knocked you for six. Having a hard time actually processing it. Already pregnant? But... but what does that mean? Am I not the father after all? All these questions and more now running through your head as you stared again at the ultrasound image.
Dr. Kerry meanwhile continued on, apologizing now. "I'm sorry, but it seems to be the case. The symptoms that you've already experienced ...the morning sickness etc, usually lasts for about three to four months, and you said it yourself that it's gone. As for the physical changes, the bump only begins to show after about four months as well. And for first time mothers, such as Miss. Card, it's not uncommon to start showing slightly later than that. As you now are."
"Just hold on just a minute," Randall told him. Desperately trying to get all this straight in his head. "If that's true, then how the hell didn't anyone notice this before?"
"We have to take full responsibility for this error of course," Saunders explained, "but you have to understand, Randall, our focus was exclusively on saving your life. At the time, it didn't even dawn on us to carry out any sort of pregnancy test. I'm sorry."
"You're sorry?" he scoffed, almost laughing now. "Jesus Christ... So I'm... I'm carrying someone else's baby?" His eyes now locking on yours. Feeling a strange mixture of both relief and sadness as this revelation suddenly hit you. As if your brain didn't quite know how to respond. One minute you were going to be having a baby with your best friend, and the next, you weren't. Talk about a total mind fuck.
Misinterpreting this question however, Saunders responded, "Well, technically speaking it's still yours. But yes, it was the real Laura Card who conceived it. As for who the father is, well that anyone's guess really." Just so long as that guess wasn't you apparently...

The Ultimate Transplant
Someone you know is given a new body & life
PLEASE ADD CHAPTERS! A close friend or family member is horribly injured in an accident. As they lay dying in the emergency room, another patient dies of a brain aneurysm. Both of them are organ donors, so a surgeon decides it's the perfect opportunity for him to try an experimental surgery. He transplants the victim's higher brain (the cerebellum) to the donor's body in an attempt to 'save' a life. Amazingly it works. But the surgery was not approved so the hospital convinces the families to keep quiet, arguing that revealing this operation to the public would bring never-ending media attention to all involved. That means that the patient will have to publicly assume the identity of the donor. What will this mean to your friends and family? Who else will you tell? Although you will spend a lot of time and effort giving support, how will all this alter your relationship to the patient? And how will he or she adapt to a complete change of body and identity? Many transformation stories focus on the change or victim, so I thought it would be interesting to instead have the POV be someone who sees the change from the outside. Writers feel free to explore a change in age, gender, class or ethnicity - and the repercussions that change would have on the main character (and others).
