Chapter 32 by simmaster
How does this mess turn out?
In your favour.
Suddenly, the warrior that started this is finally killed, making for the first casualty. And since he was under the effect of your spells, you feel a boost in your XP. Right. In your fear of **** you almost forgot the second reason you have for doing this. Looking at the carnage going on throughout the inn, you suddenly feel overjoyed. So much delicious XP about to be harvested.
And indeed, as you wait there, doing your best to turn the battle in your favour, more heroes drop. And soon enough, you feel a sweet, sweet, level up. And another.
*Ding!*
*Ding!*
*Ding!*
You're having the time of your life when finally you feel a hand grab a hold of your arm. You panic for a moment before you look up to see Morwyn.
"Time to go, little fella. This ain't gonna stop anytime soon, some of these guys probably respawn right here in the inn."
You want to object, but obey anyway, running after her as to not stumble while she pulls you with her by your arm. You manage to escape the inn, and then your mistress takes you towards the forest.
"That was fun!" she says with a laugh.
"You were planning that all along, weren't you?" you ask.
"Oh no, my plan was to just walk in and own it. Confidence is key, as they say. But apparently 'they' are wrong."
"...That's a terrible plan!"
"Well you're still alive, aren't you?"
"I gueeess... But let's not do that again."
"Yeah no, apparently I'm gonna have to find somewhere to put you whenever I go into a town or whatever..."
You glance back to make sure nobody is following you. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Someone, you can't tell who, comes out of the inn and runs in your direction.
"Uhh... We've got company."
"You don't say?" Morwyn replies with a sarcastic tone. "Let's just make it into the forest. We can lose them there."
The hero pursuing you is only slightly faster, so you do make it into the forest. After some running, you're pretty sure they're no longer following. Morwyn must be too, because she stops and puts her hands on her knees, breathing heavily.
"Whew... Suddenly wish I would've invested in a bigger stamina pool..." she says, laughing again.
"How are you doing?" you ask. She doesn't look like she's doing great, with cuts and bruises all over her body. Shame you have no healing spell or you could prove yourself even more useful to her... Also her robe is still pretty unscathed. Double-shame.
"I'll be fine. Just gotta pop a few healing potions."
With that, she reaches into her inventory for some of said potions. You look around warily, making sure that you really aren't being followed still. And then you notice that the ground around you is... moving, in some places. Suddenly there are bursts of dirt as skeletal hands reach up from beneath, crawling their way up to the surface.
"...Well shit," Morwyn mutters while digging around in her inventory. "I didn't make any."
"What?!" you exclaim as the skeletons pull themselves up to waist-height. You count six of them in total, wearing rusted chainmails with missing links, and partially decayed leather and fur armour. From the loose dirt around them they also pull up rotting wooden shields and rusty, chipped swords and axes.
"That asshole interrupted me before I got to it, okay?!" Morwyn shouts. "I started with the more profitable ones!"
"What kind of hero doesn't carry healing potions on them at all times though?!"
"Shut up and do something!"
"Me?! You're the one with the flashy spells!"
"Well I also don't have enough mana for this many cunts!"
Alright... It's up to you, then. The skeletons are pulling their feet out of the ground, swaying lazily as their flimsy bodies struggle to maintain balance due to their heavy weapons and unevenly distributed armour pieces. Then they walk towards you. They are technically of no threat to you, since you're on the same team. But unless you want to anger your mistress, you might want to do something.
So what will you do?
Game Monster
From Creep to Boss
You come into being as a low-level monster, the kind heroes chew through like popcorn. You know the drill, whether you're a player yourself or an artificial intelligence, and you're sick of it. You set out on your own quest: to defeat the heroes at any cost (or at least be an epic boss somewhere down the line).
