Chapter 17 by MidbossMan MidbossMan

How should I try to get past Kyrie?

I'll persuade her Erika needs to be captured (Pink Trigger)

"Ma'am, you have the wrong idea. That Furudo Erika is actually a criminal herself; you can't trust the things that she says. It's no coincidence she arrived upon this island just after me. She needs to be found before she can cause trouble."

"Hmmm..." Kyrie didn't look convinced. She cupped one hand at her cheek, while keeping the gun in her other, held low and not quite level with me. "Do you have any proof that you arrived on the island before she did?"

What? You saw for yourself... This morning, the servants found me on the beach and brought me here before the rain could start in earnest. Erika, on the other hand, you only met just now.

"Does that prove that you were on the island before she was? Let's consider a hypothetical," Kyrie proposed, continuing to calmly smile as she held my life in her hands with that vicious reasoning ability that was befitting a detective itself. "Say that you were intent on **** her- which, per her proposal, you were- and chased her to this island. When the storm came up, you were unable to find her. Then, once you'd confirmed the majority of the family and the servants were busy, you spoke blithely to me, telling me of some precious thing you'd lost on the beach. You went out to search for it. That precious thing was none other than your original target, who you were chasing before the two of you fell **** and washed up from the sea. She'd awoken by this point and was on the lookout for you. Using her ingenuity, that young girl evaded you and made it to the house first. Now, washed up and beaten, you arrive to try and convince me to assist you in your original plan to capture her. My question is: what story could you possibly have that would be good enough to make me second-guess the obvious conclusion I've just drawn?"

I clicked my teeth, hoping the sound would be drowned out by the rain.

"Do you know about Occam's Razor, Player?"

No, okay?! Not everyone is like your family, obsessed with Occam's this and Hempel's that and chessboard thinking and cat's boxes! Not everyone can think to that level!

"Hm... Are you trying to tell me you're so stupid that you couldn't have concocted any scheme to begin with?"

... Yes. Yes I am.

"... Well, it was a pretty stupid plan. I'll give you that."

Ha ha ha... Boy, do I feel dumb. Please let me in to towel off-

"It was stupid, yes, but what really makes it stupid is the way that girl explained that you'd try to pass yourself off as less intelligent than you really are in order to worm your way in. So far, it's practically as though you're reading from her script."

Wait! That Erika is a criminal! Why is that so much harder to believe?! This is sex discrimination! This is ageism! Erika is the real criminal here!!

"Is that so? But Player, that girl told me she was a detective... Yet you're trying to make me believe she's a criminal."

Just then, a grinning face, framed by freshly toweled purple hair, with a neat white towel wrapped like a turban around its cranium, appeared in the doorway behind Kyrie, peaking out from behind the lady's hip.

"And the detective can't be a criminal!"

Shit! Even without Dlanor here, the Decalogue was still in place, as long as Erika had the detective's authority. Erika had just replaced Dlanor with another well-armed lady capable of killing me to enforce the Decalogues. Dammit, Kyrie, let me start over! I just let that criminal accusation slip, okay? Isn't the logical choice to tie my hands and drag me inside right now?! Would you really shoot somebody in a situation like this? You can't take back that decision!

A man who rejects mystery like I have has no right lecturing others about logic, huh?

The shot rang out throughout the guesthouse. From my position, it was just barely audible over the pounding rain and crashing thunder. I didn't need to hear it anyway; I was already falling into the mud, becoming the first **** on a night full of them. Of course, when I as Piece Player died, the game's condition was fulfilled; Meta-Player died along with me.

What's next?
