Chapter 23

Whats there to do from here?
Head toward the dogs.
Bruised and ravaged, but armed with a torch, Jessica decided she did not feel safe returning in the same direction as her attacker. Leaving her only one other option. To head across the bridge toward the loud barking. Shivering despite the warm night air and the heat coming from the torch, Jessica walked, feeling slightly more in control with each step, but a knot of beastly desire forming in her core.
The barking grew in pitch as she walked between the buildings. A dozen or so cages lined the sides of the street, leaving little room for walking. These dogs were the latest hunting fashion, but Jessica always felt they were trading one beast for another. Jessica had no desire to doddle, many of these cages looked of poor make. Quickly walking, Jessica came to an intersection. To her left were more dogs in cages and a high wall she thought she could maybe just barely touch the top of, and a dark ally to her right. Shrugging, Jessica went to the right, before the barking could get any louder. The barking diminished quickly however when turned the corner, giving Jessica some relief.
Jessica knew where she was again. She could return to the balcony the brute had first taken her (which should now be empty) or there was something of the militia hunter's house ahead.
Jessica thought disdainfully of the militia hunters, whom her patrons thought nothing but poorly of, self-important and frequently requisitioning things from the townsfolk. But they were too well armed, and they hadn't stopped the church from doing the same. Her patrons had told her to stay clear of them. Jessica swallowed. Their advice was usually selfish though, and she dimly worried they were concerned she'd rat them out for their beastly drinking habits. And her aunt spoke of them as if they were brave and righteous lot, doing what was necessary.
Then again, ravaged and reeking of the beast's seed as she was, perhaps exposing herself to hunters of any sort would be ill-advised.
The exhausted Jessica pondered her options.
