Chapter 6
What's next?
He encounters an arguing couple
The only thing that dulled Stanley's sting of rejection, which would otherwise ruin a perfect morning, was the beautiful aroma of his two bacon cheesecake deluxes. Literally salivating at the thought of eating his breakfast, Stanley pulled his car around the side of the store, exiting the drive-threw and heading for the nearest parking spot. Stopping his car, second passed before he devoured into his first cheesecake, bacon and icing soon covering most of his face.
He was tearing open the packaging of his second one when a large black truck pulled up in the spot next to him. He'd normally have been oblivious to such a happening, Stanley being more focused on the second half of his breakfast, when it became very apparent that the two riders of the vehicle adjacent to him were shouting at one another.
Curious, Stanley lowered his meal and rolled down his window, the voices transforming from dull muffles to coherent, angry sentences.
"You fucked him didn't you? You stupid slut!"
"I did not! Who do you think I am, some skank who spreads her legs for every guy she meets?"
"You certainly weren't out 'just having coffee', that's for sure!"
"I was! We met up and conversation ended up lasting longer than expected. We hadn't seen each other in years! There was a lot to talk about. Next thing I knew, it was late, my last bus long since passed, and you were asleep at home. So I crashed with him. On the spare bed!"
"You expect me to believe that, you dumb bitch?"
Irritated that his meal was ruined, Stanley shouted out at the couple, raising his voice so that it too could be heard threw the glass windows. "Hey, keep it down! Some of us are trying to have a pleasant morning!"
A brief wave of fear passed through him as the truck passenger was quickly lowered, but it was quelled once he caught sight of the girl in the car. She was a pretty young thing, wearing a simple black dress with long auburn hair. The tears streaking her face would have saddened poor Stanley, had it not been for the seething anger that was current blazing in her eyes.
"You mind your own business, fuckface!" The large, muscled brute next to her shouted at him, once again earning the ire of the girl.
"Oh shut up Jace, you going to accuse him of cheating too?"
"You shut the fuck up, bitch."
"Hey!" Stanley shouted once more, bringing the attention of the couple back to him. "Has it become the norm now to be disrespectful to women?"
"Yes, you dumb brick!" Jace yelled back, rolling his eyes. "The years of chivalry have long since passed; I can talk to her as I damn well please. Now mind your own damn business."
Pausing, Stanley took a quick moment to evaluate the situation, noting that his first approach hadn't helped. He tried again, focusing his attention on Jace, ignoring the crying girl. "You yelling at your girl is interfering with my breakfast, which makes it my business. Now, will someone tell me what's going on?"
"Yes! Finally, some sensibility!" The girl shouted, raising her arms her in the air. She gave Jace one last glare before turning back to Stanley, her expression softening for a second. "You probably heard most of it already, but I ended up meeting an old friend of mine for coffee yester-"
"I'll tell the story" Jace cut her off, rudely interrupting her. "You just sit there and let me talk. Now, according to her, she was meeting up with this old friend of hers, and was supposed to be back before midnight - but she never did. Instead, I get a text a day later, asking me to come pick her up at this sleazy motel, and she tells me some bullshit story about how they spent most of the evening talking, didn't make her bus on time because he wouldn't let her leave, and so she had to sleep in a 'separate room'. Frankly, I think it's horseshit."
"It is not! How can you even believe that?"
"Because," Jace's voice echoed across the parking lot once more, "if I met a girl as hot as you, I certainly wouldn't respect her relationship. So, why would he?"
In the car next to them, Stanley scratched his chin, wondering why he'd bothered to get involved.
How does he resolve the situation?
