Just as James began to recline into the sofa, determining not to risk upsetting her, she turned back. He froze. She moved closer, shimmering purple and...brown? That hadn't been on their chart. Her eyes closed slowly, and her forehead pressed against his own.
He felt like someone had poured hot water across his head and down his spine. What was that? As she moved away he caught a slight glimpse of gold shift around her head. Gold? What were gold and brown?
Her cheeks burned with pink, shining brightly. Mentally, he shrugged to himself. She'd already done...something. He moved in and kissed her. She gave a cute squeak, but didn't move. After a moment, she managed to mimick his lips. He could see the blue and purple even with his eyes closed. He felt his heart skip, and flashes of that same brilliant gold echoed in his mind. Brief as it was, he'd forgotten the entire world.
Slowly, he pulled away and put his forehead on hers. The same warm feeling spread, and this time he saw that it happened at the same moment her head shimmered with a golden waving pattern.
Almost breathless, he managed to ask quietly. "So...what does that one mean?"
Her answer was to grab his head gently, and spread the same feeling back through him. An image of the two of them in this room, much older and surrounded with imagined children that looked like her. He understood.
He placed his hands in the same places on her head, and whispered," Me too."
They wrapped their arms around each other, intermittently kissing gently and pressing their foreheads together. Eventually they broke down into giggles, before falling asleep on the couch.
