Chapter 128

What's next?
Hall Drama
After dinner, you head back to your room to bring a quiet end to this busy Tuesday.
But as you walk through the eerily empty corridors of East Hall, thinking about the big pile of work that you have to get done tonight, you hear the sounds of muffled screaming. It’s a feminine voice, yelling. Your eyes widen, you swivel your head back and forth, trying to find the source of the noise, worried that somebody might be getting hurt.
You pace down the corridor, the screaming becoming easier to pinpoint when you hear a man’s voice yelling shortly after, the individual words almost intelligible. You come to a stop before a door, and then a chill runs down your spine as you realise whose door this is.
It’s Rachel’s.
“You motherfucking BASTARD,” Rachel screeches, followed by the thump of her hand slamming against something wooden. Her desk?
“You’re the one with PROBLEMS,” Griffin yells, his voice distinct even through the thick of the door separating you from them. “You’re the one trying to control EVERYTHING that I do.”
“Oh, don’t you take that tone with me,” Rachel says, her voice practically dripping with acridity. “You’re the one who thinks that sleeping around with other women is fine. What do you think I’m to do? Just look the other way?”
“Wha… what?” you hear Griffin sputter, and you feel your heart sinking in your chest.
Rachel and Griffin are fighting, and it doesn’t seem to be over a small matter, either.
“You know what I’m talking about,” Rachel says, and you can practically see the way that she must have her hands folded over her chest.
“No, I don’t,” Griffin protests, but you only hear Rachel growl in response.
“Stop playing dumb,” she yells. “I KNOW about you and Mars.”
“What the fuck?” Griffin says, but it comes a fraction of a second late, late enough that it raises a red flag for you too.
“Yeah, that’s right,” you catch Rachel saying in a low voice. “I heard Mars crowing about it. Don’t you go trying to deny it.”
“Look,” you hear Griffin reply, sounding exasperated. “I don’t even know what you’re talking about, like come on, at least give me something to work with….”
It’s not an admission of guilt, but it’s enough to make you think that something must be going on. There must be something you can do. You consider knocking on the door, interrupting the two of them, but you pause as your fist is an inch away from striking the door. Is it your place to intervene here? Technically, you aren’t even supposed to be listening to this conversation. This might just be something that the two of them are working out together. Rachel and Griffin probably don’t even want you there.
The conversation drops to a softer volume still, soft enough that you can no longer hear anything, even with your ear pressed to the door. You realise how bad this would look if somebody were to come by and catch you like this, or, worse, if Griffin were to head out right now.
You slowly back away from the door, thinking that there must be something that you can do in this moment. You decide that there’s only one of two things to do: either you’re going to find one of the RAs and ask them to help make peace between Griffin and Rachel, or you’re going to go to Mars and get the truth straight from her.
