Chapter 9 by jealco

What do you do now?

Get out of town

You're not equipped for a fight, nor do you really know what exactly you're doing if you get into one. Every second you spend in town only increases the chances of you getting into something you can't get out of. Dying isn't in your plans today, and you resolve to get out while the getting is good.

You turn back towards the smoldering ruins of the gates. By now, the monster wave should have pushed the defending heroes well past here, somewhere in the vicinity of the mercantile quarter. A massive explosion from that direction confirms your suspicions, and reinforces your desire to get out of town while you can.

Mindful of the possibility of both monster reinforcements, and the potential for a group of heroes to try to slip into town from behind the assaulting forces, turning their flank, you keep to the shadows as much as possible, stamping down on the desire to simply sprint for freedom as you've tried so many times before.

Your patience pays off almost immediately, as a troop of elven shock troops clatters down the main street, jogging towards the mercantile quarter. They don't notice you ducking into a nearby alleyway and watching them as the pass, and you release the breath you didn't realize you were holding. The main street would definitely have more troops on it than them, and you'd be wise to avoid it at all costs.

You follow the alleyway to it's far end, then cut towards the gate down the small side street you find yourself on. It doesn't take you long to find yourself skirting the walls, and you trace them until you're hidden in the shadows of an alcove just inside of the wreckage that was the gates. Glancing to the side, you can see that abandoning the restaurant was a good idea, as it has once again been set afire by someone, along with every other building just inside the gates. The thick, black smoke prevents you from seeing into the city.

It doesn't prevent you from seeing the lowly goblin assigned to secure the gates, though. He stands there, looking towards the main street and the gate, his back to you. It seems his programmed purpose is merely to act as a lookout against heroes attempting to pin the monster **** into the city.

With a start, you realize the goblin's the same level than you, and that gives you an idea. Gripping your short sword tightly, you carefully pad along the wall, your bare feet nearly soundless against the soft dirt. As you get within striking distance, you take your short sword in a two-handed reverse grip and strike downwards at the base of the goblin's neck...

Does your attack succeed?
