First, A Short Speach...

You stand before the assembled crew that will make the crossing with you and join you in the colonizing the new world.

"People of the Netherlands, let me now explain our full purpose in making this crossing. I have reason to believe, that there is an undiscovered continent across the Atlantic, this land, to which we are sailing, will be rich in various goods that we can harvest and process to ship back to the neatherlands for profits undreampt of. More than that though is that this unclaimed land can be farmed for food, and harvest timbers to build shelters and other things we require: you and your children's-children's-children will thrive there alongside the many more Dutch colonists who will come after. However, there is something more important still: should the Spanish again overrun our homeland: if we are well established enough in the New World, our countrymen can escape to our colonies there and from that power base regroup to reclaim Amsterdam and the rest of Holland. All this, prosperity, freedom, and a perfect fallback position is ours for the taking, all that remains, is to get there! Bossun, beat to quarters and let's get our ship under way!" You state, and there's a general chear and the sailors scramble to do just that.

Two months later, eight months after you arrived in this world, no one is cheerful. Food supplies are low, there's no one who isn't sick of every imagined form of salt beef or fish, and signs of scurvy are starting to appear: just to top it all off, Ell is eight months pregnant...
