Chapter 29
by
Manbear
Has the tension eased?
Enough to look around
"Lets finish looking around." You decide aloud and Cassia nods in agreement. Neither of you speak as you pull your armor back on, and collect the gear that got scattered about the floor. You don't know what to say after what just happened, and Cassia is almost certainly ashamed of how she has endangered her vows to her Temple. Using the blue lights the two of you search though the dusty grouping of rooms.
There really isn't all that much to look for but you can't relax until you know that the set of rooms are clear of both the yellow-eyed demons and the brutish man-beasts. Sticking together you find a suite of four of the elliptical rooms with round doorways and curving walls, one of the rooms was more than three times longer than the other more circular rooms. In each of the rooms you find a thick layer of undisturbed dust; in one of the far rooms you discover another heavy metal door much like the one you left sealed in the first room, this one however is still ajar. You close and seal the door with much less trouble than the first door, the alignment of hinges was far better on this hatch.
"Do you think any of those beasts are going to sound the alarm?" You ask Cassia as you secure the hatch. The idea of finding a score or more of the undercity demons waiting for you outside each of the portals was more than a little disturbing few minutes checking for any other signs of trouble.
"I don't think so." Cassia replies as you move back to the largest oval-shaped room and move along its perimeter looking for any other doors. "The two times I entered these catacombs we were attacked by only the mindless beast-men, but our guides told me that the Demons were incapable of working toget..." her voice trails off as you find yet another elliptical door before you, but there is something startlingly different about this one. Unlike the large tarnished metal hatches pitted with corrosion and spots of rust, this door was made of polished wood without even a spot of dust anywhere on its gleaming surface.
"What's this?" You ask in wonder. Every other wooden object you've seen in the catacombs has crumbled to dust, yet this entryway looked as pristine as your old master's front door.
"Wait!" She stops you just before your hand touches the polished surface. "There is magic here, not evil, but definitely old magic." You sense Cassia's excitement and turn to face her the bluelight from your palm lighting the glow of her face.
"What is it?"
"I've heard of these, Adonis." She tells you in a whisper although you are now convinced that there is no one in this suite of rooms but you. "The wealthiest undercity dwellers used powerful preservation spells to keep their possessions intact while they waited for the overthrow of my ancestors who drove them underground." She holds your hand in hers squeezing it with surprising strength. "Even after Athena and Apollo sealed the catacombs the demons believed that the Titans would return to power, these rooms have not aged a day in the hundreds of years they've stayed hidden."
"Is it safe?" You ask as your excitement grows with Cassia's.
"Maybe not, but most of these rooms are filled with ancient wonders. They are one of the main temptations that lure adventurers into these catacombs in spite of the warnings of my temple." The bronze door handle gleams invitingly at the center of the door, and the idea of treasures and wealth lying just on its other side is tempting both of you.
Do you risk opening this room of wonders?
