What's next?

Drive towards Brennan's Place

Date: Friday, July 25th

Status: CLAIM DAY

Time: 18:55 - 19:10

Locations: Urban Streets; Residential Transition; Near Brennan's Apartment

Alex gripped the gear shifter, his palm damp against the leather as he felt the heavy, idling vibration of the SUV through his arm. He looked at Jen, whose eyes were still darting toward the darkened storefronts of the intersection. The silence between them was a heavy, suffocating thing, punctured only by the faint, distant sound of a car alarm that refused to stop.

"We are going to Brennan's place," Alex announced, his voice carrying a sudden, hard-edged finality. He shifted the vehicle into drive, the transmission clicking with a solid, mechanical precision. "He was supposed to come over to our place tonight anyway. We were going to finally get that eighty-inch TV onto the wall mount and then just order burgers and have a movie night."

Jen let out a shaky, half-breath of a laugh, her fingers loosening slightly from their grip on her denim thighs. "A movie night. God, that feels like it was a hundred years ago, Al."

"He is the most disciplined guy I know, Jen," Alex continued, guiding the SUV into a smooth, controlled turn. "If he saw that broadcast - and I know he did - he wouldn't have gone out into this mess. He's too smart for that. He'll be home, hunkered down, likely waiting for us to call."

"You really think he's that solid?" Jen asked, her gaze turning from the window to watch her brother's profile. "I've only seen the pictures and heard the gym stories. I don't know him like you do."

Alex offered a small, confident smirk, the first one that had reached his eyes since the university. "He is as solid as they come. He's the one who taught me that a man is defined by his discipline, not his ego. But there is one more thing, Jen. Something that means we don't have to worry about the... the weirdness of that text when we get there."

Jen arched a mahogany-toned eyebrow, her interest piqued despite the terror. "What do you mean?"

"Brennan is openly gay," Alex explained, his tone shifting into one of profound, grounding relief. "Always has been. There are no 'ifs' or 'buts' about it. He has zero interest in women, which means he is the only man in this entire city I can trust to be around you without worrying about the leash that Liberator guy mentioned. He's our safe harbor."

"That... that actually makes me feel a lot better," Jen admitted, her shoulders dropping an inch as she leaned back into the insulated comfort of the seat. "I was worried that even if we found a friend, the rules would just... take over. I'm looking forward to meeting him, Alex. He sounds like exactly what we need right now."

The drive through the residential transition was a descent into a landscape of unsettling, quiet anomalies. The coastal breeze had picked up, whispering through the palm fronds that lined the boulevard, but the usual Friday night traffic had vanished. The streets were strangely empty, a series of long, dark corridors illuminated by the amber glow of the streetlights.

Intermixed with the silence were the remnants of the first hour's panic. Alex had to ease off the accelerator every few blocks to navigate a zigzagging path around abandoned vehicles. Some sat with their doors wide open, their interior lights casting ghostly white boxes onto the asphalt, while others had been left idling, engines still running even now.

"Stay sharp," Alex whispered as they approached a stalled delivery truck near a narrow bridge.

The SUV slowed to a crawl, the tires crunching over a scatter of broken glass. Suddenly, a shadow detached itself from the side of a darkened convenience store. A man in a disheveled business suit lurched toward the passenger side, his face a mask of frantic, wide-eyed desperation. His hand shot out, his fingers clawing at Jen's door handle.

Clack-clack.

The sound of the mechanical lock holding firm echoed through the cabin. Jen let out a sharp, muffled yelp, pressing her back against the driver's side console as the man began to pound his fist against the window, calling for her to open up, he just wanted to talk to her.

Alex didn't hesitate. He slammed his foot onto the floorboard, the SUV's engine let out a savage, guttural roar as the tires found purchase. They lunged forward, the man falling away into the darkness of the rearview mirror. Jen sat in a state of rigid shock for several minutes, her breathing coming in short, jagged gasps until they cleared the commercial block.

Five minutes of high-tension navigation brought them into the quieter, tree-lined district where the older brick apartment buildings stood. Alex eased his foot off the gas, the SUV's speed dropping as he rounded a final corner.

"Coming up ahead shortly," Alex said, his voice low and tactical. He began to scan the curb with a practiced eye. "I usually park right over there, near that old oak tree. It's about two hundred feet from Brennan's front entrance."

"Why not just park in front of his door?" Jen asked, her hand hovering near the door handle as if ready to bolt.

"Look at the street, Jen," Alex replied, gesturing toward a cluster of cars that had been abandoned in a haphazard pile a block ahead. "I don't want to add another obstacle to the road if we have to leave in a hurry. And I don't want to advertise exactly where we are to anyone following the sound of an engine. We walk the last bit in the shadows."

He guided the SUV into the spot, the tires crunching softly against a drift of fallen leaves. He killed the lights first, then the engine, letting the darkness of the urban canopy swallow the silver vehicle.

'Brennan's place is right there,' Alex thought, his heart thudding a steady, rhythmic count against his ribs. 'We just have to cross the gap. Two hundred feet to safety.'

Alex looked at Jen, offering her a final, grounding nod. "Ready? Stay close to me. Do not stop for anything."
