Chapter 3

Where do you turn though, up or down?
Down, into the forest
You'll go into the forest for today, up in the mountain you'd just find stone (which can be found in the woods as well, though more seldom) and goats, which can be substituted with smaller prey from the forest, you could even find game of equal size (Stags and such). But: before you make your way down, you admire your view for a few moments, you're already used to the lively green forest starting at Mt. Impornes foot and stretching for a long way, partially even to the horizon, occasionally interrupted by clearings, large boulders, more or less ancient ruins and other interesting locations for players to explore. A few miles from the mountain you can see the nearest town and the lake it was built next to, the lake connecting to the mountain via a small river snaking through the wood after it springs in the mountain and cascades down as a waterfall. You know all this, you've seen the mountain behind you as well as the mountains on the other side of the forest, making up a part of your horizon. BUT, it is still different, everything still looks the same, but sharper somehow, as though as the gods had given everything new and fresh outlines. It seems your newly increased perception comes into play already. Thinking of your new stats also reminds you of these _Eagle eyes of yours, and indeed, as soon as you even think about it your vision really does (for lack of a better word) "zoom in", allowing you to see even more details than before.... Is that? are you really? Yes you are! Your seeing a damn squirrel testing a nut, from all the way up here! Holy shit! Who knows, if your perception grows even more you might be able to actually hunt without really leaving your home, you'd still need to collect the drops though. Wait a moment! Your Raised_ position feat should help in that regard! You have already your crossbow in hand and trained at the squirrel you would never have seen normally when you really think about what you are doing, a squirrel wouldn't be the best of prey, only little meat, plus it's questionable whether you would actually find it again down there, or get it of the tree you'd pin it against for that matter, and finally: there are only 12 bolts in your quiver, are you really willing to potentially (probably) waste one like that? Welp, you convinced yourself to not try to kill the squirrel from up here.
After you scanned the forest some more (just because you can) you finally walk down the mountain and actually into the woods. On the way down you decide upon a strategy for today, you'll search out a few ressource trees so you can get a fire going in your cave again, sleeping on the hard floor is uncomfortable, but sleeping on the cold hard floor is positively unbearable, plus beeing able to cook your food is pretty useful as well. You're also gonna keep your eyes peeled for any small animals that you can put down, as long as that doesn't happen over such ridiculous distances it should be fine, and you don't really want to go on the hunt for bigger game if you don't have any actual experience with your crossbow yet.
The actual work in the forest is (in a way) both eventful and and not. You quickly learn that your perception isn't just about the eyes but all your senses, your hearing is a lot keener than what you're used to, perhaps you were a bit harsh to your class when discovering it, it will definitely be more difficult to follow your prey and retrieve it afterwards, but it became easier to kill it with just one shot and the ability to esier notice the animals near you makes up for the new lack of a Tracking feat. Your hearing is also useful for evading danger, as you learn, when you hear a small group of bandits long before they notice you and can hide from them. You know (sadly out of experience) that they would have no qualms to attack you for what meager belongings they could loot from you, to be honest, what did you ecpect? They're literaly called bandits. But you have two more instances of hearing interesting things: around noon you hear a distant "System error" sound(it takes you a moment to remember what that sound means) and at some point in the early afternoon you suddenly hear hushed voices you quickly identify as goblins: "Stick-bow-human gets stuff." "like gobbos did." "but stuff useless now?(he sounds a bit confused)" "maybe Stick-bow-human not knows" "or Stick-bow-human can still use stuff (a third voice intervenes) i will go ask boss, you stay here and watch." "ok" "but don't him make notice you." after some time the third voice apparently returns: "boss says maybe stick-bow-human knows, maybe not, still look, if looks like can use later or maybe next day or something than we tell boss, quick" "ok, boss" "boss knows what stick-bow is boss?(the other goblin who stayed behind asks)" "no, now shut up, don't want heard" "mhm-mhm boss.". By the time the apparently somewhat smarter goblin returned from (you guess) their village, you had already thought about the whole thing for a bit. Goblins are not very dangerous alone, you could probably still beat one in melee, even with your weakness in such fights, but goblins don't fight alone, they fight in groups(and then they're far more dangerous), it's already weird to run into just three of them, temporarily even just two! Anyways, it is surprising at first that you can actually hear them, goblins might be not that good as fighters but are actually somewhat adept at stealth, but you guess that in this case their stupidity and your (you guessed it) perception work together, they're a bit too loud when talking to ach other (stupidity isn't a great thing to have) allowing your ears to pick it up. You also feigned ignorance of them and did not attempt to find them with your eyes as well, not wanting to give them an inclination to attack if they notice, and if they still did, you had prepared a trap for them, you moved closer to the river, planning to wade through it should they attack you, you were tall enough to do so with only a small inconvenience to you, but goblins would be severly slowed down at least. But as long as they would just look you continued your scavenging and hunting, although you made a point to not stray to far into the woods and always stayed somewhat near to the river.
Now, it might be a bit confusing why it takes you so long get some wood and quickly fire a crossbow bolt at small animals foolish enough to pass a humans path. First of all it took some time to harvest the trees (which you had to get to first, luckily you already knew a few from past lives) as the progress bar you had to fill only moved slowly:
no skill, - 50 %. no tools, -50%. low strength -20%. Total harvesting speed: 2%
meaning that you had to tap the tree fifty times with your hand to finally get some wood (pinewood by the way), you could also repeat this whole thing with each tree for three to five times before it turned into a stump and gave a written message of being depleted and respawning in a few hours. What contributed far more to you spending so much time though, was what happened after you collected your first wood, you receiving a notification:
crafting ressources gathered, crafting menu unlocked.
which naturally made you check out this new menu,
Welcome to the new crafting menu, here you can finally find all the old crafting systems combined into one easy menu that automatically accesses the ressources you own and recognises the tools, workbenches and other crafting stations you have at your disposal right now.
About recipes, those can be divided into three classes
- The easiest ones to get: simply have any of the necessary resources or skills and you unlock it.
- Somewhat more difficult to get: you can attempt to copy something you saw or heard of, only however, if you have the necessary skill to gain some insight into the item or were given at least some informations like that (although you would still need the skill to craft it)
- The potentially most difficult to get: you have to find actual blueprints for these, in some cases they will even be consumed on use
Oh, by the way, you can learn about the items from 1. via seeing them or a blueprints as well and about those from 2. with blueprints too.
.
.
New recipes:
Simple recipes for:
- Woodworking
- General crafting
Below that came a wide plethora of relatively simple crafting recipes, most requiring wood, though not all, some, the more useful looking ones mostly, also required a certain skill-level in general crafting or woodworking, thus finally explaining the use of these new skills of yours. And well, that was the reason why you spent so much time collecting stuff in the forest, you had learned just what you'd be able to do with it, and maybe you would even unlock more recipes yet. So, what (apart from wood) did you gather: some moss and one unit of tree gum (which actually did unlock some new recipes where it would be used as glue) from futher harvesting trees, sweet gras (a sweet smelling gras you still only had a few recipes for) and lots of tall grass from grass ressource nodes (where else), clay you found in the ground near the river (although the only recipes for that were simple pices of pottery that also reqired an Oven you didn't know how to build), and of course what was dropped from the rabbits you encountered. The most time you spend slaping trees though, hoping to find more tree sap as just one of that (rare ressource) just wasn't really sufficient, but you didn't find any more.
In the late afternoon you finally decided that you had enough: your turnout amounted to:
100 wood
36 moss
240 tall grass
60 sweet gras
1 tree gum(or sap)
20 clay
3 rabbit hide
3 rabbit meat
already, which also neared your carrying capacity, so you decided to go back to your cave, as you left you could hear a bit more from the goblins although you were already to far away to make out what they said.
On your way back up to your home you passed two small boulders marked as ressource nodes, and collected a few stones from them since you'd need them to rebuild your fireplace, there might have been no crafting recipe for a fireplace like that, not even when you had collected them, but you knew it worked before and also still knew you would need eight, to carry those you had to leave 6 wood as you didn't want to become overencumbered . Packed like that you finally arrive back at your cave shortly before sunset, looking forward to trying out crafting by the shine of your new fire and eating for the first time in your life (that life at least).
How does that go?
