Dinner With The In-laws
It was Wednesday, which meant it was time to bicker.
"There's no way I can go."
"Baby, everything will be fine."
"What if they don't recognize me?"
"Everyone thinks you've always looked like this."
"Yeah, I guess you're right. I'm just nervous. Well, more nervous than I usually am when going to dinner with your parents."
"Darling, my parents love you."
"They love Noah. I'm Na'el."
"And when you're Na'el, everyone thinks you've always been Na'el. Nothing has changed."
"Ok ok, you're right. But do I have to wear this dress?"
"Yes, you do. You know how my father is. Besides, we match, and you look incredible."
"You look better."
"Let's stop the flirting now before it gets out of hand and get going already."
...
As much as Mary loves her father, she will never understand his instance of having family dinners at fancy restaurants instead of at home.
Once the two of them walked in the door, all eyes went to them. Mary doesn't consider herself to be particularly attractive, but her wife supernaturally is.
They expected the eyes and the cat calls, but what surprised them was who they were coming from.
It wasn't the men, it was the woman.
But they couldn't focus on that right now. They had bigger fish to fry. Because it wasn't a table of four the hottest (who totally wasn't eyeing up Na'el like a piece of meat), but a table of six. And sitting with Mary's parents, was a young man and woman.
"Father, what are they doing here?" The other young woman rolled her eyes while the man stood up and held out his arms.
"Come now sister, that is no way to greet your big brother." Mary tried to hold her glare, but couldn't. In the end, she gave in and hugged her brother.
"Matt and Brittany came over for a surprise visit. Your mother insisted on inviting them for dinner."
"It's been so long since the six of us have been together."
Mary internally grumbled as her brother pulled out a chair for her, but completely ignored her wife.
"I wonder why," she muttered under her breath. Mary silently refused to take the seat that her brother offered, and instead put Na'el in it before taking the seat next to her. Matt barley reacted, and instead sat between his wife and mother.
"So, Na'el, how did the book reading go?" asked Mary's father. Before Na'el could speak, Brittany beat her to it.
"You're still doing that? You should know by now that you can't make a living like that."
As usual, Matt did nothing to stop his wife.
"Brittany, perhaps if you actually read one of her books, you'd change your tune," said Mary's mother. Brittany rolled her eyes.
"Like I'd ever read something that someone like her would right." Mary nearly stood up and slapped her sister-in-law, but her father cut her off.
"Enough. Na'el is just as welcomed in this family as you are, regardless of her background. Honestly, I don't understand why you two are always fighting." Mary couldn't stop herself.
"Because Brittany is a classiest bitch." Brittany turned her head to her husband.
"Are you going to let her talk to me like that?" Matt adverted his eyes.
"She has a point." Brittany huffed and looked away.
This was going to be a long dinner.
